Tampa Bay Area

Fishing Report Captain Charles Walker

3/2/03

Just what we needed, more rain and wind. I guess winter is just going to hang on till we all go crazy this year. I got a great report from south of the area (Naples to Sarasota) about warm water temperatures and lots of baitfish in the Gulf, so surely spring will be here soon.

On to the bait house reports:
Ruskin Bait and Tackle - 813-641-2325 – Lots of mangrove snapper and sheepshead are coming in from around the bridge here in the Little Manatee. Trout are on the flats in big numbers this week with many of them keepers.
Buddy’s Bait and Tackle on the Courteney Campbell Causeway in Tampa - 813-287-1026 – Trout and reds have been caught this week on live shrimp around the bridge. Snook are biting now around the area of the floodgate. Trout and snook are being caught on the flats around the mangroves and in the mouth of the creek this weekend, between the rain storms.
Trappman’s Bait and Tackle on Gandy Blvd in St. Petersburg - 727-579-1414- Sheepshead are still biting like crazy on the Gandy. A few Spanish mackerel have been caught along our bridge. Snook are starting to get active as the water warms up. Some trout are on the flats and there are a few reds being caught.
Pass-a-Grille Bait and Tackle on St. Pete Beach - 727-360-6606- Keeper grouper have been caught off our gas dock this week. Lots and lots of big sheepshead are coming in off our dock as well. Our offshore boats have been getting amberjacks and some grouper when they could get out this week. Fishing is getting better and better.
The Skyway Fishing Pier - 727-865-0668 and the south Skyway - 941-729-0117- Spanish mackerel really showed up this weekend and anglers using Gotcha Plugs or silver spoons are really cleaning up.

Folks, feel free to call any of the places in my report for more information, and be sure to tell them that you read about the fishing in their area in Capt. Charlie’s fishing report on the Internet.

I miss snookin' in Tampa Bay. I'm stuck down in the Keys and I've only caught one Hog trolling through Perky Creek. It's just not the same.
