I have an outcast fishcat 9 footer and weigh a little more than a small elephant........what is the LB thrust recommendation for a toon?
also, I hate the idea of mounting it forward but reaching behind to control it will absolutely kill me [
][
] (bad back) any thoughts on how to make this setup more user friendly?? Even the extended handles seem like it would be a pain.
I was actually considering a bow mount model with the co pilot/auto pilot so I could use a remote to steer but it will add weight and I would have to engineer a new mounting bracket. Anyone ever do this kind of setup??

[cool][#0000ff]Most guys who have played around with electrics on toons seem to feel that 30 to 36 pounds thrust is plenty for everything except fighting back in against 50 mph winds. If you let yourself get caught in that stuff, twin 150's wouldn't help much.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The back problem is a BIG issue. You don't need extra twisting. When I finish here, and can get into another window, I will look up the link for a recent thread we had on rigging a remote control that is simple, effective and lightweight.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Toons are not designed for mounting motors on the front, but many tooners have done so and feel the easier access offsets the other negatives...like getting your toes chopped off in the prop and fighting with the motor when trying to fish.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Another biggie, with your bad back, will be the battery. You need a mega deep cycle battery to power your motor all day and to get you back to the right side of the lake. Lifting a heavy battery in and out of your vehicle and mounting it on the rear deck of your toon takes some back power.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Let me know if there's anything I can do to help you get rigged up. I know my way around frames, PVC and stuff.[/#0000ff]

You will need to PM flygoddess to get her to repost them. Good info on rigging a remote.[/#0000ff]

Like the Dean of Tubing says 30-36 lb thrust is about right. You can take the head off and turn it 180 or even remove it and extend the wiring and have it next to you. You'll need your fins to steer. Should be no problem then.

[black][size 3]Here is what Evil One is talking about. Total cost for make over, under $25.[/size][/black]

I am 310# and have tried the front mount and did not like it. It's in the way!!
Since then I have as suggested by FG (flygodess) mounted it on the rear and removed the control head, extended the wireing so that now the control is beside me when I am fishing. I am in control[
]. The use of the fins to steer is very easy and very controlable, have no fear[sly]
I do use a 50# thrust motor, why, cause thats what I had.
Now for the battery, I have a deep cell and am using a plywood base to mount it. Now I leave mine on the tube cause I carry the toon on a trailer.

Wow!!! All this great info, thank you all so much.
I am going with the "flygoddess setup", looks pretty easy to do. Where did you get the forward/reverse switch?? The rest of the parts I probably already have... Wire, box, connectors, heat shrink, etc.

[cool][#0000ff]I have a request. When you post pictures, please attach them to the post rather than copy and paste from another source. If the other website goes down or changes we lose the pics. Many of the good pics you have posted in the past no longer show up. The are just boxes with red Xs in them.[/#0000ff]

That's a nice looking glass rod in the pic, FG.

[black][size 3]The wire loom, The old man got at work, but you should be able to get one from Lowe's, Home Depot or any hardware store. The little box is from Radio Shack as is the Big radio knob. The gear or speed control (reostat) is in the motor connected to the handle. Just remove it and place it horizontally in the box. I made scratch marks on the box where each speed was and them printed out the numbers. Putting off in the middle. You will need some strong waterproof glue and some silicon and be sure you rewire it correct. I used quick connects.[/size][/black]
[black][size 3]If you have more questions, just shout![/size][/black]
[black][size 3]I have the Minn Kota 30 short shaft and at times it is too fast, so I point my flippers straight down to slow me down.[/size][/black]
[black][size 3]Thanks Zonker on the rod. It ia a Lamiglass that Alan built for me and it is funnnnnn![/size][/black]
[black][size 3]Tube Dude, sorry bout the photo bucket thing, but our computer crashed last year and the photo bucket is the reason I didn't loose these pictures.[/size][/black]
[black][size 3]I will do the down load on the ones I still can. If the X is showing up, it is because I have moved it in the bucket and I can correct that.[/size][/black]

[cool][#0000ff]Whenever good pics show up, I try to make copies for the archives. But some of the ones in the past I let slide until I "got time" and they were gone when I went back to harvest them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Our forum is used by quite a few folks as an archive. I have been a bit lax in keeping the Best of the Best updated and in adding to the picture board. I have been doing a lot of writing on the book and have some new responsibilities, but that is no excuse. I do plan to do a major facelift and extreme makeover soon...uhhhh, on the board. Not on me. [cool][#0000ff]I'm good for right now, but when I get into going back trough the threads and harvesting the good stuff I may PM you with links to the posts that are missing pics I could use. Then, if you have them, GREAT. If not, I will deal with it.[/#0000ff]

Just got back from picking up my brand spankin new minkota endura 30lb thrust 12 volt.
$70.00 bucks out the door
Got it at a pawn shop, person brought it in not knowing what exactly it was (won at office function) and sold it to the pawn shop. Still in original box all pkged up and never opened.
I was looking at them at the Cabelas bargain cave and they wanted $89 for a reconditioned one.
This unit has the telescoping handle so I may be able to control it without a ton of twisting back to reach it??? Time will tell.
[signature]
Just remember, if you do mount it to the back of the boat, you will still want to turn the head around so the it is facing the same direction as the prop. That way to go forward (you will be going backwards) you will be pulling and not pushing.

[cool][#0000ff]SCORE!!![/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Now, if you were as good at fishing as hunting (bargains) you would be unbeatable.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]That extended handle can help a lot, but you still need to turn around once in awhile. It will give you a feel for what it can do and what you want though. Then you can make the modifications if it is necessary.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff][size 1]Exactly why I got the toon, so I can get off the shore and start learning how to actually catch fish.[][][/size][/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]You are thinking right. One of my big challenges over the years has been to convince scoffers that tubing and tooning are serious fishing systems. True, there are some things they can't do, that boats can do, but you become a better fisherman by getting up close and personal and by operating in stealth mode.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]It is kinda like archery hunting compared to rifle hunting. You simply learn more about your quarry and focus more on finesse when tubing or tooning. And, in many cases you will catch more and bigger fish than either boaters or bankers.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]We gotta team up on the big blue pond this summer to work over those big perch and other species.[/#0000ff]

Yeah, once in a while we all come across a deal. This is my first after 40 years......Lol!
