Just thought I would start a conversation on drop shotting, who is haveing good results and different methods like how many hooks and distance between them and the types of bait used. I was also wondering the different ways of tieing the hooks on and if anyone is using the "stand out hooks".

I do not know that much about drop shotting but I am interested in learning more. There are three times when I have tried it. the one that I use the most is actually with my fly rod. when I need to a nymph into a really deep hole I like to beef up my tippet ant but a drop shot on the end with the nymph of nymphs coming further up the tippet. This has really worked well for me in couple of select locations. It works better if you have a 7-9 weight, but I can get my 5 weight to do the job.

The other time I do it is in a river with deep holes and a lot of brush. The brush is so thick that my fly fishing skills are not good enough to keep me from swearing all day so I resort to what works, worms or minnows. Ok purists go ahead and beat me with a few stripes[Wink]. In this case I do the same thing eccept with a spinning rod. I let the "dropshot" bounce along the bottom and try to feel the strike. This has been really productive in the right situation.

This winter I fished boysen in Wyoming and the locals said to use live minnows with a drop shop for perch. I tried it and it worked ok. I guess I caught as many as anyone around me but it was kind of ironic when i came home and caught many more on good ol' perch eyes at Mudlake.

Hope you find someone that knows more about it then me.

Hey thanks windriver, I too use the flyrod and I am about as pure with mine as you are with yours. I even had a spinning reel on one of my 9' 8w for panfishing for a while, love that feel and boy would it cast the small jigs.

Well I dropshotted about 3 weeks ago at cove arm, cj strike and had 3 fish in 20 min. and have done some reading and am interested, even more so with the thought of using my fly rod. What knot did you use to tie the hooks on with? and did you tie them directly to your leader or did you do a drop loop loop?

When I step down my leader I only cut off one of the ends of the knot and I leave the other one about 6" long. That way I have a couple built in lengths of mono to tie to.

I've done drop shot fishing for bass a few times. I've only tried the standard technique with a weight a foot or two below a plastic. I haven't tried the stand out hooks. I've heard a few people that did not like the stand out hooks. I'm sure the stand out hooks have there place but I don't have any intentions of buying them anytime soon.

Interesting post, as I was thinking about the same topic a bit ago. Since I'm now in the warm water fish corner of the state, I would like to try it. I wonder if it is as productive for crappie and smallmouth as it is for largemouth.

Well on my first attempt of drop shotting resulted in 2 crappie and 1 small mouth in 20 min. So I am hoping it will be a productive method all season long.
