[red][size 3]Oh my, the ideas that went through my head.... If shad are scarce just make up your own school. The picture shows only one plastic "hooked" but at Powell you can have up to three per line. I'm all ready to head to the hardware store and start bending some piano wire. Heck, you could make a double tier pretty easy out of two sturdy Crappie harnesses, put the blanks on the top set and three hooks on the bottom tier, or how about mixing it up with some anchovy chunks as well. I could tie up a bunch of different sizes of marabou bucktails to swim on the contraption and presoak everything in some smelly jelly or old-fashioned anchovy juice for a trump card. Imagine glow baits at night just below your green submergible lights. With a two-pole permit you could bounce one of these rigs around under the boat just to keep things stirred up while you do the real work with your other rod. How about a little controlled drifting or downright trolling with one while you're scouting the area for the schools? Maybe replace the center trailer with your favorite crank bait while you're at it. Hmmmm, the voices that torment me.... Quick, someone tell me it's just another gimmick![/size][/red]

That is a pretty ingenious contraption. There may be a few signals crossed but I will be glad to help uncross them.

I'm sure that you know that Stripers are "Anadromous". The one in the picture meets the description.

The Shad that you are depicting in the umbrella are a "Freshwater" only species. Stripers do seem to like them when their favorite food is not around.

Anchovy, (from the Ocean) is their first and formost, favorite food. If you were to go to Powell with Shad for bait, you may catch a striper or two. If you went there with Anchovies, you Will catch some good ones.

Even though you will be targeting the "Landlocked" Striper, it is still in their instintcs to go after the favorite bait.

anchoves work realy good at lake Powell as well.. and it is the only place in utard where you can chum. for stripers only and anchoves are the only thing you can chum with inless the stores down there get sardens mixed in with there choves.. but i dont think the wordens down there know the diffrence so i'm sure it's all cool..

The Wardons don't care about no stripers. They would let us club them to death if it were possible.
There are so many stripers, in so much of lake powell that they are about to eat themselves out of house and home. When they do, there will be nothing left but big shad and a few huge stripers. No bass, bluegill, crappie, bullheads to speak of. All eaten by maurading gangs of hungry teenage stripers.
Your rig would work great in Powell. Almost anything does. If it liiks anything like it's edible and you get it naywhere near a Powell Striper, it gets hit.

My favorite way is to motor along watching the sounder, the school shows up well suspended over the deep water. I drift the school throwing big cast masters with a chunk of Anchovie on it. Let it sink on a closely watched freeline till the sounder shows it's gon through the school, it it dosn't get hit. Then reel fast up through the school. Two or three jigs will get a bass every time.
Once you get one on, reel him up slowly, the school will follow, throw out a few pieces of anchovie when you first see your fish. Make sure at least one is just a chunk of anchovie and a split shot being held tight. Reel your fish is as fast as you can when a second line gets hit and grab another rod already rigged with anchovie. You can keep a school right at the boat like this for a good long time if you have 3 guys who work together. We've had fifty fish stops.

Wait until the bass population stabilises for the umbrella rig. It would be to much work to launch and retreive it fifty times a day for 18" fish.

I have used Umbrella rigs like the one in the picture for Stripers in NJ. You will need some pretty heavy tackle to troll those things. it takes a lot of expirimenting to get them to run at a depth you want them to be. adding weights, letting out line etc. you should also troll them at a minimun of 2mph. They worked great in the salt...good luck!!

I have seen the pros use those umbrellas a lot in the striper tournaments on T.V. They look pretty cool I wouldn't mind trying them out for other species.

Uuummm... Ya I do believe the photo has been chopped. However, umbrella rigs (where legal) do indeed work. Here are some pic's of my father in law from last December. He was fishing just outside the Chesapeake. There's a photo of him with a double, but triples and quadruples are also common. That's a lot of fish to reel in all at once. I also had to include a picture of his refurbished Albemarle. He spent the last year fixing it up and dialing it in with state of the art electronics. Sweeeet!

[red][size 3]The "authentic" picture was part of an advertisement to sell the umbrella in the other picture. It looks like they should have got a hold of you for a "real authentic" picture to post with their product! I thought it was a great idea but with the funny picture - who knows? Thanks for sharing your pics. I think I'll make a couple just to play with at Powell in case I get bored. Hopefully I can post a few pics like yours and not have to go to all the trouble to try and put the fingers holding the fish back on with Photoshop like the other guys![/size][/red]

just to let you know I have seen them at cabelas and have thought the same thing. the only bad thing is that you would have to clip a couple of the hooks off. but if you do try it please let us know how it works.
