[black]Hit the Bear yesterday for some spring ice fishing. Started off the morning trying for a few suckers. Seems every one was catching them but my two compadres. Hooked up with BLFG and watched him do his magic on Whites. He'd pluck one right after another from the rock-pile. Also quite a few other BFT regulars up there.[/black]

[black]After we tired of sucker fishing, it was time to try our hand at some trout. We move around quite a bit but the trout fishing was tough. We did manage a few with the largest being this nice cutthroat that went home to the fry pan.[/black]
[inline Eric_Cutt.JPG] [black]I can say this about the Bear Lake ice conditions. Even though there is 12-14" of good blue ice there, there are several holes starting to develop in the ice. Everywhere we went, we had to dodge openings of open water, some large enough to swallow a 4 wheeler. Also there is about 2 inches of water under the melting snow. In other words, there is still a lot of good ice fishing left on Bear Lake but you need to pay attention to your surroundings.[/black] [black][/black] [black]The snow along the shorelines is melting and as of yesterday was about shot. The shorelines on beach access is pretty sloppy too. 4 wheelers can access the lake pretty easily but you'll need to pick and choose your access for snow machines if you don't want to go through the muddy sand.[/black]

Beautiful fish. Did you get any decent macks?[Smile]

[black]No macks for us this trip; only cutts. Tough day on the Bear but I'm not complaining. It's been another good ice season up there. I like fishing the ice on that lake when it decides to freeze over.[/black]

Rich thanks for the loan of your power auger to drill a couple holes for Tincanfsh and me. It was tough fishing for all of us also (wiperslayer1 and reelfast) was also in our group. Reelfast caught one mack right on the rockpile, and wiperslayer1 caught a small cutt. Of course I missed my one chance at either a mack or cutt, but whatever it was I don't think that it was a very large fish. We managed to connect on plenty of small whitefish (larger ones were tough to come by) and we ended up with enough cut bait to keep us supplied for several months:

I was there also, catching suckers and whitefish. I was the one
who had the screaming kid (that stuck his leg in his fishing hole around 1:00PM
I was the one who had the same kid screaming again after sticking
his leg into another hole around 3:00.

[cool][#0000ff]You're stickin' the wrong end of the kid in the hole. (Joke)[/#0000ff]

Were you the family on the Rockpile with the ice shack? If that was you I spoke to you when I walked over and talked to Ira, and then after talking to him I went back and got my Jet Sled. If that was you your family sure had a mess of suckers!

Yes, that was me. We caught a lot of suckers but my kids didn't
mind. We ended up with some whitefish also. Thats probably my
last trip there (ice fishing) for the year. I think I will hit some of the lakes a little closer to my house.

It is about a 2 1/2 hour trek for me (from the Bountiful area). How far do you have to travel?

Kent,

I am only 40 minutes away so it really isn't that far. However, there are a couple of places near my house that have been better than Bear Lake (for me) this year. I guess I will give them a try before the ice is gone.

Good luck Jason. Next year i will make it up there for sure.[Wink]
