INFORMATIONAL SEMINARS AND TURKEY CALLING CONTEST WILL HIGHLIGHT NORTHEAST OUTDOORS SHOW
ALBANY, N.Y., March 12, 2007 - Attendees of the 2007 Northeast Outdoors Show will have the opportunity to participate in an array of interesting and informational seminars at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany, March 16-18, 2007.
Outdoor sports-related seminars will include: "Basic Predator Hunting"; "Striped Bass in the Hudson River: Where, When & How to Catch Them"; and "Fishing Adirondack Ponds 101." The Northeast Outdoors Show will also feature a turkey calling contest sanctioned by the National Wild Turkey Federation.<br />

All-New Seminars at the Northeast Outdoors Show<br />
New to the 2007 Northeast Outdoors Show, Phil Brown, the editor of Adirondack Explorer magazine, will offer insight into the world of Bob Marshall, a pioneering peak-bagger who became the first man to climb all 46 of the Adirondack High Peaks, with his seminar entitled, "Bob Marshall in the Adirondacks." An accomplished outdoorsman, Marshall has climbed through the Adirondacks, explored arctic Alaska and founded the Wilderness Society. Marshall set an unprecedented course for wilderness preservation in the United States, saving millions of acres of wild land before his passing in 1939 at the age of 38. Today, the Bob Marshall Wilderness, a wilderness complex of over a million acres, sits in Montana as a testament to his legacy.<br />
Tony Rainville, owner and founder of Foothills Habitat Consultants, is leading the way in a new trend for hunters in the Capital Region, offering advice for property owners looking to create a better wildlife habitat. Offering a seminar in "Quality Deer Management - A New York Success Story," Rainville will illustrate how a variety of habitat improvement projects, deer management strategies, food plots and hunter management can improve the outdoor experience.
Turkey Calling Contest and Hunting Seminars<br />
Rob Marotta is a Northeast hunting expert and Pro Staff member of Pete Rickard Inc., the manufacturer of the Original Indian Buck Lure, which has been the dominant scent in tracking deer for over 60 years. Marotta has been an avid hunter for over 30 years, and a licensed New York State guide for over 10 years. Marotta will assist with the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) Sanctioned Turkey Calling Contest on Saturday, March 17 at 12:30 p.m.<br />
The turkey calling contest is open to all current members of NWTF. Registration will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the NWTF booth. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners and the contest offers categories for all ages and ability levels, including Senior, Amateur, Youth and Owl Hooting (youth).<br />
Members of Pete Rickard Inc. will offer tips on the sport of predator hunting. The seminar entitled, "Basic Predator Hunting" will emphasize gear selection and information on predators like the coyote, fox, bobcat, and bear. Mike Ames, expert local outdoorsman and Pro Staff member of Pete Rickard Inc., will hold seminars on duck and goose calls, and fly fishing.<br />
Angling Seminars<br />
Anglers at the 2007 Northeast Outdoors Show will have the opportunity to catch John Vargo's seminar, "Striped Bass in the Hudson River: Where, When & How to Catch Them." Vargo, publisher of "Boating on the Hudson" magazine and author of Hudson River Stripers, The Guide, will discuss what's happening on the Hudson River and where, when, and how to catch it's most popular fish, the striped bass. Vargo will offer tips on bait and the latest angling trends. Known as "Mr. Hudson River," Vargo has spent his life fishing, hunting, swimming and ice boating near the Hudson River.<br />
Patrick Sisti, a licensed NYS Outdoor Guide, will offer a seminar entitled, "Fishing Adirondack Ponds 101." Sisti will speak about how to choose an Adirondack fishing pond, the best techniques for fishing and the recommended tackle to use. Sisti has also contributed to the book, "Chicken Soup for the Fisherman's Soul."<br />
The Capital District Fly Fishers (CDFF), which is a chartered organization of the Federation of Fly Fishers, will also offer anglers the opportunity to catch-up on fly fishing techniques with fly-casting demonstrations in the base of the Egg.<br />
A fully-stocked indoor trout pond will offer fun, family-focused entertainment as children attempt to "reel in" dinner for their parents.<br />
The Cooking Game<br />
Sodexho, the leading food and facilities management services company in North America, will demonstrate several ways to cook wild game in a series of seminars over the three-day weekend.<br />
Executive Chefs Paul Szakats, Patrick Mannato and Rick Wells, as well as Banquet Chef Mark Jennings will host five cooking demonstrations at the Outdoors Show. Those looking to inject some excitement into their cooking routine can stop by the base of the Egg Friday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, March 17 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; and Sunday, March 18 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for some unique recipes and tips from some of the area's top chefs.<br />
Recipes will include a Roasted Leg of Venison with Spiced Hudson Valley Pear Chutney; Braised New York State Red Cabbage and Potato Gratin; and Duck Three Ways, a multi-tiered duck dish which includes seared duck breast topped with duck confit and julienne of smoked duck.
Special Exhibits and Other Attractions<br />
Just weeks after the best anglers in the world gathered in Alabama to participate in the Bassmaster Classic, the next generation of bass fisherman will demonstrate their skills in Albany at the Bassmaster CastingKids competition. The Northeast Outdoors Show will host the event on Saturday, March 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Now in its 16th year, CastingKids is open for girls and boys in two age groups, 7-10 and 11-14. Conducted by the New York State Bass Federation, the competition challenges children on their flipping, pitching and casting skills. The winner from each age group will advance on to their respective state competitions.<br />
Visitors to the Northeast Outdoors Show will also see live predatory animals with naturalist Andrew Simmons, who has risen, studied, and lectured about endangered predatory animals since 1971. Guests will get up close and personal with such animals as the black bear, Burmese python, alligator snapping turtle, and golden eagle, among others. Simmons' expertise with animals has earned him repeated appearances on both "The Today Show" and "Good Morning America."<br />
"Talons! A Bird of Prey Experience" will spotlight an exhibit on falconry, an environmentally friendly hunting sport. Lorrie Westman, of the "Talons!" program, will soar through topics like raptor conservation as well as the importance of these birds in keeping our environment's natural balance. The exhibit will feature many different raptors including owls, hawks, and falcons, and will celebrate the oldest hunting sport in history.<br />
The annual Outdoors Show will also feature the return of the Pete Rickard Indoor 3-Spot Championship archery tournament. Last year's event attracted 75 contestants, including several who were nationally ranked. This year's event will offer a youth category.<br />
