i am visiting my in-laws in fresno for a week and would like to fish as much as possible while I am here. I will probably be down in the oxnard area friday and saturday. Any advice on species/rigs etc. would be greatly appreciated. On saturday I will be fishing with tubn2 on a boat, but friday i would love to try some fishing from shore or pier. Also if anyone knows the monterey area well, I may be in monterey on thurs. Once again any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is this where you drill a hole through the pier and fish it like you do through the ice? Sorry, can't resist. I'm just a little bummed that the ice season is soon coming to a close. Sorry, I don't have much advice for you, but have fun anyways.

I like to fish the dike at Monterey and have caught a few 25" baracuda on of all things Prism shad. also catching other species on chunks of squid or half a anchovey. I like to use 8 or 10 lb line with 16lb leader a couple of #3 or 5 split and a size 8 or 6 heavy salt water hook.
walk out the dike about 100 yrds from the last boat house and cast between boats coming into the harbor. When you are done there is an awsome Italian resturant there to finish the day.
there is also a party boat there if you don't mind the crowd that takes half and full day fish trips.
use the bait rig off the Piers which ever you pick.I have also had fun with a bobber and 1/32 oz chartreuse hand tied jig tipped with some bait off the peers.
Have fun! Give a second look to the waitress for me!!!

[font "Verdana,Arial,Helvetica"][black][size 1]Hey Jedburton. I'm looking forward to hitting the Salt with you again.
As far as the piers go, make sure you have a light rig and a med/hvy rig.
On the light rig you will put on a double drop shot with #6 bait hooks and small strips of squid. Usually a 1 or 2 oz weight at the bottom will be sufficient. 1st drop at 18 inches 2nd one at 24inches. Keep an eye on the tide.
Tide in, bait fish in. Tide going out, take out the med/heavy rod and throw some of your bait fish out for a nice Halibut.
Your Halibut rig is rather simple in concept and doesn't require you to take out a 2nd mortgage on the house to get the necessary equipment.
1. Tie a swivel on to the line.
2. Tie a 3foot leader onto that swivel.
3. insert the leader to free flow through 1 more swivel and tie the tip of the leader to a 3oz pyramid sinker.
4. Tie a new leader on to the free floating swivel making sure that it stays free moving on the previous leader.
5. Tie a hook onto the line that is tied to the swivel that is on the free floating setup. The hook should be at least #1 octopus hook or a Mustad 9174 1/0 bait hook.
Instead of Monterrey, you may want to come down a little farther south to Pebble Beach. There are some kewl species to play with there evern from the shore.
That is close to the PCH Hwy 1 which will take you down to Oxnard when you are done.
Let me know if you have anymore questions. And don't listen too much to that Tarpon Dude. He is from the East side boys. hee hee.
Actually the Tarpon4me is a good salty dog too. His species are a bit different from here but we speak Shark. That is a universal language. Thank God or I wouldn't be able to understand what he is saying sometimes.[cool][/size][/black][/font]

[cool][#0000ff]Plan B for Monterrey would be to drive a bit further north and fish the pier at Santa Cruz. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Lots of good fishing from surf or rocks along the whole coast in that area. Some of the most beautiful coastline in the USA.[/#0000ff]

Those species would include:
Pacific Sardine
Anchovy
Spotfin Croaker
Yellowfin Croaker
Jacksmelt
Topsmelt
Pacific Mackerel
Spanish Mackerel
Walleye Surfperch
Pompano- looks alot like the Walleye Surf perch but it smells like the south end of a northbound Crocodile.
There are other fish to catch from that pier too.
You can get:
Barred Surfperch
Butterlip Perch
Opaleye Perch
Sand Bass at certain times.

If you are going straight to oxnard, you can fish the pier without a license. Just pick up your day license the next morning in the landing.
At the pier, you can bring some of the Gulp sand worms in the Camo color. You can get those at Wallys World. They will work for most of the smaller species so that you can use them for bait for the bigger species.
Give me a call on the cell when you get into town. I can point you into the right direction to Wallys World or a Sports Challet down here.[cool]

I will do my best to get there around 7 or so in the morning. I think we will be leaving here at 3 in the morning, unless you think the fishing will be just as good if I get there later,

The tide is good for fishing most of the day.
High tide is 7:49 am. It will continue to be out going until 2:41pm. That will be your Halibut sequence. From there you will have tide change until the 9:49 high tide mark. That is the mark that should get you into some of the night life species.
Leopard Sharks are starting ot come in and are leagal from 3 feet on up. The ideal eating range is the 4 to 5 footers.
I can fillet anything that you bring in. After all, I learned from the best. TubeDad. He's da man.[cool]

Sorry I got to this so late. They aren't catching much over there right now. A few Sand Bass, Sand Sharks and Croakers are all in season right now. You might be lucky near the full moon to catch some of the nice Leopard sharks that are roaming the whole Cali coast right now.[cool]
I'm heading down to Cherry Beach in Long Beach on the 29th. Let me now if you want to join the rest of the local gang. We will be meeting around 6:30 to catch the low tide as well as the incoming tide.[
