So I finally got to take my first fishing trip to Powell. I had been down a couple of times before but haden't done any fishing. A friend and I drove down Saturday afternoon around the north end of the lake past Hite and took a dirt road that lead us into a slot canyon off of the main channel. It took us an hour to get all the way down to the lake but it was well worth it! We got out of the Jeep just as the sun was going down, quickly rigged up a couple of poles and just started casting from shore. About a half hour later I landed my first ever striper! It was 25" and was pretty skinny so probably only went 3-4lbs but it was still a heck of a start. My friend caught a couple of stripers that night as well for his first ever striper action.
We actually were not far from the main channel but we only saw three boats come through all day Sunday and none of them stayed very long. We were fishing out of toons and tubes until we got tired of fighting the wind and then just worked our way around the shore in the evening. My first fish on Sunday morning was a nice fat smallie (again my first!) that went about 15". We managed quite a few more stripers all ranging from 18-25 inches, a few more smallies, none as large as the first, a couple of crappie, the largest going about 14 inches, a few small large mouths with the largest for me at about 12 inches (also a first!), and one walleye for my friend. All in all it was a great day being able to check off so many new species. Those bass sure know how to fight! I'll post some pics as soon as I can dig out my camera.
