Will be spending a week in Puerto Vallarta in mid-May. I want to spend a couple days fishing, but know little about the area. I'm open to all suggestions from charters to DIY. I've posted on the saltwater and Mexico boards too. Anyone out there with info????

[#0000bf]I have fished along a good part of the Pacific Coast and up into the Sea of Cortez. But, never PV. I suspect it is similar to most resort areas that have fishing as an attraction. There should be numerous fishing guides, charter boats and everything from small pangas to cruisers available. [/#0000bf]
[#0000bf][/#0000bf]
[#0000bf]If you have booked a hotel in the area, they usually have connections to get you on a boat or hooked up with a guide for inshore fishing.[/#0000bf]
[#0000bf][/#0000bf]
[#0000bf]At that time of year everything will be wide open. You can spend some serious money and fish offshore for large sailfish, marlin, dorado and possibly a couple of members of the tuna family. [/#0000bf]
[#0000bf][/#0000bf]
[#0000bf]The cheaper panga fleet usually take out two to four anglers for a day of inshore fishing...everything from light trolling to heavy pargo (snapper), jacks and grouper around reefs. If you fish the inshore reefs you never know what you might bring up. There are hundreds of species of small to large fish and they all have an attitude. The pangeros usually provide bait and tackle (for a price), but if you bring your own gear and use lures you will have more fun. Those fish hit anything. Large silver spoons (Kastmasters, Krocodiles, etc.), plastics of all shapes, sizes and colors, and of course the expensive hardbaits. Just don't throw anything you don't want crushed or chewed up. Those babies gots teeth and powerful jaws.[/#0000bf]

[#0000bf]If you really want some lonesome fun, try tossing small jigs and lures right off the beach. Plenty of fish cruise by within easy casting distance. Right at daybreak you can catch a fish per cast on light gear and every other one is a different species. It is not unusual for someone to get so hooked on the light tackle surf casting that they don't even want to go out on the boats.[/#0000bf]

TD,

I have a condo in Oceanside right by the marina. I have never thought of doing any beach casting. If I could catch a few doing it that way, I would be all over it. That would beat laying out on the beach!

[cool][#0000ff]Is that Oceanside, CA? Lots of good surf fishing all up and down the coast there. Try throwing some little motor oil colored grubs or some small spinners for surf perch and corbina. Also some decent halibut that come in close. They really whack 3" pearl swim baits or twisters or even small Rapalas and other diving hardbaits. Think wiper lures. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]If you are near the rocks try for calico bass or several different kinds of perch. Even get some cabezone and a stray white sea bass or two.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Fishing for anything beats just hangin' out to keep mama happy.[/#0000ff]

Let me know when you are headed out this way. I'd be glad to show you around my playground areas. I have had a good number of UT BFT members that come out here on a regular basis.[cool]

I fished Puerta Vallarta 3 years ago. We were there in the month of
May also. We were fishing for tuna and had some good guides. We
received a great group rate. I don't have the contact info. but can
get it from the friend that went with us.

Absolutely, book a guide. I would do this rather than fish on your own. After we caught the fish (tuna) our guides took us to a small restaurant and they cooked the fish. That was the best tasting fish
I had ever had.

You will have a great time there. Make sure you eat at Pipi's!

Sounds good, I will have to hit you up on that offer. I go down quite a bit but never take my gear.

Just find your way to down here, I have plenty of gear.[cool]
