by George Van Zant [Image: lakedixon.jpg]If you are looking for a lake that has all the family recreational necessities, then consider Lake Dixon. You can picnic and camp in true outdoor surroundings but more importantly you fishermen can enjoy some super fishing. Lake Dixon is actually very close to downtown Escondido and is one in a number of [green]San Diego[/green] water supply lakes. The camping and picnic facilities are the cleanest and the most inviting of most of the other lakes in the area. There is absolutely no trash laying around the lake because many trash cans are available for people to maintain the cleanliness. There is evidence of much pride in this cleanliness from both the lake personnel and the public that uses it.

My fishing buddy Jed Welsh and I were lucky to be invited to a days fishing on the lake last Thursday along with a number of other outdoor writers, where we all learned some valuable fishing lessons. The lake nestles a long way down from the road and drops off steeply in depth almost immediately. The water has the appearance of an aquarium in that it is very clean and transparent with visibility to 10 feet. Most of the lakes in Southern California have about 3 foot visibilities and fishing techniques are developed from this lack of clarity. Planted trout seem to circle the shoreline in some of the lakes and you catch them sometimes in two feet of water. They appear to be looking for an escape. Not in Dixon Lake. The lake at the dam buoy-line is about 80 feet deep according to my depth finder. Of course, the clean pure water invites the inevitable moss which grows to about 10 feet from the edge. Fishing from the shore can be a problem because of the steep terrain and the moss, but during our day there, Jed and I watched shore fishermen limit out on 2 pound plus trout in certain places and we didn't.

We fished from a 12 foot Valco powered by an electric [green]trolling motor[/green] which are now available for rent. I highly recommend the use of these [green]boats[/green] because you can fish anywhere in the lake. If you don't like to hike the trail that circumvents the lake you can [green]fish[/green] from one of 4 piers that poke out into the lake about 50 yards. At the base of each pier is a a parking lot from where it's an easy stroll to a bench seat on the end of the pier.

For you fishermen the best place to regularly (almost) catch large trout to 4 pounds, is in the coves. We found large schools of trout crammed into Trout Cove and Whisker Bay, which are two coves of very steep dropoffs immediately from the cliffs. The shore fishermen in these coves caught lots of fish in the morning with Castmasters and spinners and switched to power bait and worms in the afternoon. It's really a different situation than the other lakes around Southern California in that these trout act almost like they are natives. For me it was really impressive watching the hundreds of baby largemouth bass swim around the boat dock picking off small aquatic insects.

Here is a link to the fishing report for Lake Dixon and Lake Wohlford
they are close to one another but of the two Wohlford is the largest.

Of the two Wohlford has a boat ramp and allows tubeing and tuning. Dixon on the other hand is more family oriented with nice picnic areas including tables and bbq pits.
