Only annual juried literary award in the firearms field awarded to Terry Wieland
WHAT'S THE STORY?
Terry Wieland will be named the recipient of the 26th Annual John T. Amber Award in the upcoming Gun Digest 2008 (Gun Digest Books, July 2007). His "Nitro Express" feature article was printed in Gun Digest 2007.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR YOUR AUDIENCE?
The John T. Amber Literary Award is the only annual juried literary award in the firearms field. Nominations for the competition are made by Gun Digest editor Ken Ramage and are judged by a distinguished panel of editors experienced in the firearms field. Entries are evaluated for felicity of expression and illustration, originality and scholarship, and subject importance to the firearms field.
Judges for this year's competition include John D. Acquilino, editor of Inside Gun News; Bob Bell, former editor of Pennsylvania Game News; James W. Bequette, editorial director at InterMedia Outdoors; Dave Brennan, editor of Precision Shooting; Sharon Cunningham, director of Pioneer Press; Pete Dickey, former technical editor of American Rifleman; Mark A. Keefe IV, editor of American Rifleman; Jack Lewis, former editor and publisher of Gun World; and Dave Petzal, deputy editor of Field & Stream.
With over a million Gun Digest annuals in print, firearm enthusiasts have made Gun Digest the most widely read annual in the field. Readers enjoy the feature articles and the new product reports from the Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoors Trade (SHOT) Show. Nowhere else will readers find in one place the illustrated and detailed catalog of arms and accessories, featuring the latest offerings from manufacturers. The 2008 edition will tentatively include such feature articles as "A Veteran's Story" by George Creed, "You, Me and the CMP" by Charles W. Karwan, "Engraved & Custom Guns" by Tom Turpin and "Walter Hudson, Krag Specialist" by Jim Foral.
WHO IS THE RECIPIENT?
Terry Wieland is shooting editor of Gray's Sporting Journal, columnist for African Sporting Gazette, Safari Times and Petersen's RifleShooter, and a frequent contributor to Shooting Sportsman, American Rifleman and Gun Digest. He has written five books and has hunted extensively in America, Europe and Africa. In 1999, he was named Leupold "Writer of the Year."
"My fascination with nitro-express cartridges dates from an Elmer Keith article on Westley Richards double rifles in a Gun Digest from the 1960s," Wieland says. "I bought a book by John Taylor, and then another. I was hooked, and I've stayed hooked."
His own big double is a .500 Nitro Express, built in 2000 by John Rigby & Co. of Calif. He lives in Ontario, Canada.
