Well. Yesterday started off interesting. I got a late start. So I sped the entire way to Strawberry. Almost. Got just past Jordanelle, and had a cop radar me going 89 in a 65. [] Ouch. And the @!#$ cop made me even later.
I finally pulled up there about 9 or so. Not a lot of open water on the Berry side, but enough. I hiked down into my bay I like to fish(about a mile and a half), set up, and started to fish. Notta. Moved up the bay a little bit onto a grassy bank rather than sage brush covered. And that's when things got fun.
I had one pole out with just Rainbow Sparkle Powerbait, and casting a silver Jakes with the other. About every 3-5 minutes or so, one or both of the poles would get slammed. A couple double hookups, which really makes things interesting. Most of the fish were 19-21" Cutthroats. One nice Rainbow. The last fish that bit the Jakes took it with him. I got him up to the shore, and he made one last blistering run. I've caught some nice fish in my day, but this one, the only thing I could really think was 'Wow'. I figured about 27" or so, big fat Cutthroat. And he ran, and had the lure too deep, and SNAP. The big break. Those fish finally quit biting about 1 or so, so I made the long trip out with just the lonely rainbow along for the trip.
Made stops around the lake, even the lower river. (One nice Brookie down there; Too many fly flingers stirring up the fish, though.) Got one nice one on Soldier Creek right by the boat ramp. But that was it. Soldier Creeks nearly all the way iced off. And a lot more people fishing that side, too.
Finally stopped at the Ladders on my way out. Got another 5 cutties off of Rainbow Powerbait, the last one a 23 1/2"er. Good note to end the trip on.
Even though the day started off crappy, I'd say it was good anyway. I'll never complain about catching 40 cutts or so in a trip.
