I was wondering if carp will suffice for cut bait for fishing below the dams, e.g. CJ Strike, Swan Falls.

Carp have been known to strike a small meat morsel from time to time but you will generally have better results with sweeter objects.

Most Carp have a sweet tooth. Sweet bread ball (like King Hawaiin) work well. Making your own dough ball mix can work too. Corn is good, Apple chunks, grapes etc.....

We do have soem carp bait recipes on the recipe board. The majority of them have been submitted by members that have used them for success.[cool]

My bad. I thought you were looking for a bait for the carp. lol It sucks being blonde sometimes.

Actually carp meat does make good cut bait. Carp, Chubs, and Sucker meat are some of the best. Since you are going to be fishing the Dam, I suppose you are after Perch or maybe some Cats.

It is also helpful to use a little of the Pro Cure on the bait at the time of preparation. Simply cut or disect the meat that you are planning to use, apply Pro Cure generously to the meat before storing in freezer or fridge. Simply defrost the night before your next fishing trip and you are good to go.

What are you planning to target there??[cool]

I've used carp a few times as cut bait and have caught fish on it. but it has been a few years. You might also want to try sucker or crappie. Good luck and let us know if it works well for you.

BrianID,
Is there a difference between a sucker and a carp? I thought the names were basically interchangeable.

TubeN2,
I would be going for perch [cool]. I've yet to ever fish for, and hence, catch a perch, and I have heard they are good eating. I have been hungry for some good fish for a long time now...

I was talking about Common Carp or Mirror carp when I said "carp". I was talking about Utah Sucker or Mountain Sucker when I said "sucker". It is easy to get the species mixed up. I'ver heard people use the term "sucker" to describe Common Carp, Grass Carp, Mirror Carp, Mountain suckers, Utah Chubs, Pikeminnow(aka squawfish), whitefish, sculpin or any species that someone considers a "trash fish".

Here's a link that you might find interesting.

Perch are very good eating. They have a few extra bones but a good fillet knife and a nice recipe from the Recipe board, you will be dining in no time at all.
