Just wondering what is the strongest knot to use for this application for both equal diameters and unequal diameters.

Double uni. Check this site http://www.anglerscenter.com/knot_doubleuni.htm

I like the triple surgeons knot for tying a mono leader to a braided line. It works especially well when the two diameters are different and is very quick and easy to tie.

See the other post on braids. Uni to Uni knot. Double the braid if using larger-diameter mono. I tie 20 and 30-pound braid to 80 pound mono. for tarpon, and it hasn't failed yet.
