For me I have found that the ice rod is out performing the telescoping 7' rod at a fast pace. The lil rod has all the stiffness to fight a fish as much as the big one and stores in very little space. Also the ice rod is ready to go at a moments notice while the telescoping takes a few minutes to get everything ready. Not saying its all that much longer, but with the storage issue and ease of use I vote for a ice rod. It definately is more accurate going after fish in trouble spots and it is way more sensative when jigging and going after the shy hitting fish. I have found though that the current, 3-5 knots here, plays a little havoc with the lil rod. But all in all, as of last weekend, I will ALWAYS HAVE A LIL GIANT ICE ROD ON BOARD. With a few prerigged jigs you can fit an entire fishing setup in a very small space.
I was wondering though, if you have heard of a telescoping ice rod. I know that sounds silly, but Iam always trying to find a way to minimize the amount of stuff I take on board. Mainly because I float some very quick rivers, 2-6 knots, and having a 9' "LEAD SLED" and dealing with barges, I need as little wieght as possible to deal to manuver.
Have you ever built a telescoping ice rod. If so want to share how you did it.Iam veryinterested in trying to build my own.
Thanks KAZUALT
