I could of swore someone had already posted this question but couldn't find it in the search but Whats the difference between tippet and regular fishing line??? Say for example 4lb Berkleys Vanish vs 5x Frog Hair Tippet...

I know the fly fishing elites are cringing but with the cost of Gas im trying to save a few $$$ here and there and If you roll the numbers 1 30m roll of tippet runs about 3 dollars unless you buy Frog Hair 13.00 and 1 150yd roll of regular fishing line go's for around 5 bucks seems to be a much better value.

I thought flouro and mono was all the same ??? Is tippet manufactured differently ???

Regular fishing line whether it is flouro or mono will be thicker than the same poundage tippet.
I fish year round and with clients on top of that I use P-Line regular fishing 100% flourocarbon line. It is cheaper and does just what I need. I use 6lb, 4lb and 2lb and it works great.
I prefer Flouro although there are many out there that do not think it makes a difference. To each their own. Plus Flouro will be stronger than the same poundage mono.

When you still water fish in lakes such as Strawberry, do you use P-line for your tippet as well? Do you go with a heavier line such as 8lb or even 10lb? I still want to get up to Strawberry and try that still water fishing with chrominids. I need to check out the fly shops and find some good flies.

[#bf0060]Specially when stillwatering. I have never understood the reason for a tapered leader on sinking line, but that is just me.[/#bf0060]
[#bf0060]The only time I use 8lb is if I do make a sort of tapered leader using 8 lb to 6lb to 4lb.[/#bf0060]
[#bf0060]At Strawberry I usually use 6lb, but I have used 4lb. I do use a glass rod however so the whole rod bends which saves the 4lb.[/#bf0060]
[#bf0060]I use 6wts on Henry's, Strawberry, Yuba and Scofield. I try to practice C&R so I do feel, get them in fast is important.[/#bf0060]
[#bf0060]That is where I feel a better reel with a good drag is very important also.[/#bf0060]

I have been using straight 8# Vanish when on stillwater this year and it's been fine. I think the fluro on stillwaters certainly makes a difference. I know twice this year all I have done is switch the leader to the Vanish for 2 different buddies- no change in the fly just leader to fluro from mono and their fishing success inceased dramatically.

Packfish, if you ever get a chance to check out P-Line 100% flouro, do it! I like it so much more than the Vanish. It seems more softer.
