With the recent reccomendations about Woodruff becoming a trophy fishery, I got thinking.

What lake would you like to see made into a trophy fishery? What would need to be done?

My vote:

Causey. I would like to see it become a trophy splake fishery. I think forage would need to be plated to do this. It has been a dissapointing 5 years for Causey.

Planting forage. Good Lord!! I suppose you'd want that forage protected as well, correct? Then, just as the forage get's to a point where it has established, you'd then cry foul about the protection, and want to open it up for harvest of that forage!!

Trophy waters: Every fisherman in this state had the perfect opportunity to get a world class trophy rainbow trout fishery THIS YEAR. However, no one wanted to join in. Strawberry Reservoir is sitting their screaming at all of us in the face to include the rainbow trout in the slot!

This came up about a year ago and I still feel that Jordanelle could be a superb trophy fishery with an appropriate slot limit in place for the trout. The size of the browns there is well known, but the bows grow well also, and while rare, the cutts in lake X can be impressive. I still haven't caught a Strawberry cutt yet, (maybe this year) that has been bigger than a big cutt I caught on a senko 2 1/2 years ago. The lake also has relatively limited shoreline access for shore anglers. (who generally use higher mortality bait fishing) If Jordanelle were to have trophy regs, what could be a problem would be tackle restrictions. I would favor general tackle regulations because of the bass fishing. When I look at most of my plastic lures and baits, almost all of them have salt of additives. These would be illegal by the letter of our artificial lure laws. This is typical of many bassers arsenal. Overly restrictive regs would cause a fight between be bass and trout anglers that would be ugly. It would be avoided by general regs. Anyway, it is nice to dream about both trophy trout and bass in one stop at my favorite pond.

Utah Lake and the Jordan River. Look how many trophy rivers there are in Montana that run through their towns/cities.

They just need to drain Utah lake and dig it deeper! j/k

I dont care where they decide for a trophy fishery. I am all about just catching fish. If a biggun gets on then a big bonus that is. I am not out for records. Wouldnt mind my own personal wall mounts but thats it.

I think Causey would be a good choice. It has done absolutely nothing for the fish in it for quite a while. The splake are worthless due to their size.

Are you telling me that the planting of forage is not a good idea? That it doesn't work???

The DWR planted gizzard shad in Willard as a forage base, and it has turned out well.

I know there are risks anytime you plant anything anywhere. The purpose of this thread was to get an idea of what you think could be done. To whatever water.

I vote none. Don't get me wrong I love trophy fish, but when it turns artificial flies and lures it takes away a family fishing trip.(Making it basically unfishable for small children.) I personally think we have enough of those lakes in Utah all ready. What we need is more kid friendly fishing so kids can see why we should respect the enviroment. After all if they don't enjoy fishing why should they care if lakes get polluted???

That is what makes this so difficult for the DWR and why Strawberry will never be a trophy fishery. It is too important as a family fishery. Any water that is turned into a trophy fishery would have to be remote enough that it doesn't make for a good family outing. The Gorge for example seems like it would be a likely candidate.

Porcupine- hell I would just like to see it back to the good ole days

i would like to see E-Lake made into a trophy tiger trout or rainbow trout fishery..

no forage base needed!!

Also,

Why do you assume that I would go cry foul about the protection of forage???? If this was to be done to Causey, I would be all for making it a trophy fishery... not just what I felt at the moment.

I was all for putting the slot on the bows this year, just like you and many other fisherman.

Please do not assume anything about me.

When was the last time you fished Causey?

[cool] No doubt about that Fuzzy. With the right restrictions, that place would be putting out some monsters in no time.

I GET THAT A CLOSE LAKE WOULD BE BEST. SUTCH AS NELLE. JUST WOULD HAVE TO PUT SOME LAKERS IN. ITS ALREADY ONE OF THE BEST SMALLY RESSAVORES AROUND. SOME BROWNS BUT NOT ANY REAL BIG GROWING FISH. LAKERS CLOSER TO SLC THATS WHAT I WANT.

and one other good thing with E-lake is that it could still be a great catch and take lake for the Kidd's.. do a filp-flop as to what the berry is.. take a limit of Cutt's and have a trophy size limit on the rainbows or tiger's... [sly] now that sounds good to me!

Heck, I would like to have A fish in Mona Res. let alone a trophy class res.

PBH knows more about fishing than most people will forget in a lifetime.......

I agree with Lunkerhunter. Causey has a lot of potential but is producing close to nothing. Causey is a deep lake and would be ideal for big browns and other trout. The only problem is there isn't too much for the big fish to eat. There aren't any chubs or shiners or anything that I know of. It seems like everytime they plant Causey the fish strangley just disapear. In the last few years I have rarley caught any trout at all at Causey, mostly Kokes. Those splake need something to feed on so they can get joes valley size. I don't think I have caught a fish longer than 16-17 inches out of Causey in my life, and I have fished Causey forever. The only time Causey has been really good for me is during ice fishing. There have been 30-40 fish days for me at Causey but absolutely nohting of good size. I would really like to see some Lunkers in there.

I know that PBH knows what he is talking about. But he gave no reason to why my idea was a bad one. I was just throwing it out there. I would like to hear his constructive input, and any recommendations he would have... rather than just blasting people. [cool]
