State park and recreation officials today announced the Bartnik Boating Access Site at Sterling State Park on Lake Erie will be open to boaters on weekends only through May until ongoing dredging operations are completed.
Park officials said the access site will be open May 19-20 and 25-28, which covers the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The launch will remain closed weekdays to allow dredging to continue.
The site has been closed for several weeks because the bay and Sandy Creek have become too shallow for boaters to safely navigate the popular waterway to Lake Erie. The natural siltation process taking place on the waterway has had a growing impact on recreational boating on Lake Erie over the past few years, with numerous boats getting stuck on the sand bars.
Boaters seeking access to Lake Erie are advised to use the Bolles Harbor launch, which is located three miles south of Sterling State Park. This access site offers plenty of room for launching and parking.
For more information or updates on the ongoing dredging, contact Jamie Allen, Sterling State Park acting supervisor, at (734) 289-2715.
The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
