First when the water "turns" in your opinion is the fishing better before.. during.. or after it.. is it better when it turns in the spring or fall(I assume it does both right?)... Any insight on what you think of water turning let me know.. (oh for esp for mac's)

[cool][#0000ff]"Turnover" usually only happens on lakes that are deep enough to stratify...with distinct layers of water of different temperatures. During the winter, a colder layer forms at the top and the lower layers are both warmer and different in oxygen and chemistry. Once the ice is off in the spring, the warmer layer rises to the top and the colder layer sinks. Actually, there is a lot of mixing until new layers form.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]In the fall, as waters cool, the new cold layer drops to the bottom and the warmer lower layers rise. Same principle. Colder water is more dense and sinks.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Fishing is better in whatever layer is the most ideal temperature, with plenty of oxygen and the right PH. Generally the period during and right after turnover is not very good fishing because the fish have trouble finding a "comfort zone". All the water is often murky and out of whack chemistry wise. It takes a while for surface winds to reoxygenate the water and restore a happy home for the fishies.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Every lake is different but once you get to know a specific lake, you can predict when the turnover is going to happen and how long it will be before fishing picks up again.[/#0000ff]
