Full Version: Trolling Speed for Kokes

I read on this forum that many koke fishermen are trolling around 2mph. I always thought that speed seemed a little fast. I had an older Lowrance, I believe a X-60 some 14 years old with speed indicator and seemed to catch kokes at 1.2 mph to 1.5 mph. I do understand that this is just a gauge and can vary under different conditions, but I knew how the trolling motor felt at that speed. So, this year I install a new Lowrance with GPS. It seems to show about the same speed as before under the same trolling motor speed. So, should I be running a little faster for kokes?
Also, my new Lowrance looses the bottom reading at cruising speed. I read to speed up the ping setting, but that didn't help. My transducer appears to be set right judging by the arches I getting for fish. My old unit would work fine at cruising speed. I'll be heading up to the Gorge next weekend for 2 weeks and plan on dialing in on the landlocked Sockeye. Thanks in advance.

My magic speed always seems to be 1.6 to 1.8

I used to use the motor sound technique until I realized that depending on the wind, the motor sounds the same but the speed changes depending if you are going into the wind or downwind. Now I use the speed feature on the gps to adjust.I also drag the lure close to the boat at first to observe the action and adjust the speed so the action looks correct.I use triple teasers a lot and 1.8 to 2.2 seems to keep the lure wobbling nicely without spinning. I also found that doing S turns when I mark some fish can be very effective!
