I need some help with getting a rod and a reel, it's really only for this lake I will be going to and any other lake that is the same type. I know nothing about rods or reels, I've always used other peoples when I've gone fishing. I will be getting the rod and reel at sports authority, I know this isn't the best place to get supplies, but I've only got a few hours to get everything ready. I'm also on a budget, the total cost HAS to be underneath $80. I know that I can't get an excellent setup for that low ammount of money, but I've got to deal with it. The type of fish are going to be warm water fish with largemouth and a few smallmouth.
I also would like some information about good brands of poles and reels, so I don't get ripped of and so I know the quality of the items I'm getting.
Please help me find a great setup from sports authority, under $80!
Thanks.

Hi Filter and welcome to the BigFishTackle message boards. Thank you for taking the time to register with the site. It is always easier to call someone by a username and know they belong here.
At Sports Authority, they have several different brands to choose from. You can find some Quantum, Berkley and even Shakesphere in the price range that you are looking for.
You can match that up with the Shimano 2000 reel and still be under the total of 80 bucks. Don't forget to pick up some line while you are there.
They carry Ande and Trilene Big Game for a decent price. 6 or 8lb should do the trick.
What state are you in?? Are there big Bass there??[cool]

I live in idaho, I'm not really familiar with the fish that are here though.
What is some good line to use, does it really matter? And what are the good brands to get?
Thanks for the fast and helpful reply.

I used to live in Idaho.
There are a few different species of Trout that are common in most areas including Rainbows, Cutthroats, Browns and Brook Trout. You will also find White Fish, Large Mouth Bass, Small Mouth Bass, Sturgeon, Blue Gill, Crappie, Suckers and Whitefish.
There are more species but those are the ones that are most commonly targeted.
As far as line goes, you would do fine with the Trilene Big Game or the Ande Clear line.
Do you prefer spinning reels or Bait casters? I think you said that you were pretty new so I would safely assume that spinning would be your preferrence.
The Shimano 1000 will handle 110yds of 6lb test. The 2000 model will take about 60 more yards but will also allow you to upgrade to 8lb test line.[cool]
