I got thinking the other night when i was out on my kayak. I was throwing poppers and the bite was ok, but slow. I took my second rod and rigged up a fly lined Gulp swimming minnow. no weight, just a 1/0 octopus hook and the swimbait (white, 3 in). I let that sit in my rod holder just a few feet off the bottom while i drifted along, and caught some quality fish. I think that the bait just twitches ever so slightly and does a good job mimicking a dying shad. Its nice that you can use the same bait for 10 or more fish also. Better than putting on a new piece of 'chovy every 10 minutes. Get the gulp bait. It really works well. let me know if it works for ya.

[cool]Hey TheWhizzle, I use the Gulp 3" minnow grub on a darter head jig. I get quite a few hookups with it. However I haven't tried flylining it yet. I fish from a floattube and could probably troll it same as you but not as fast. I will try it out on my next outing and let you know.

Interesting. I've tried all sorts of lures, crankbaits, and poppers but haven't had the same type of luck as when I use anchovies. Whether I'm shore fishing or on the back of a houseboat, I like to set up a line with a no.2 hook and a small lead ball bearing weight about 8-12 inches from the hook. I use a small piece of cut frozen chovy, and cast out about 20-40 ft on 6 - 8 lb line. I play with the depth by reeling slower or faster but I get great action because the stripers can really catch the flavor of a chovy versus an artificial bait. Admittedly, I haven't used your technique but I'll try it out. I've drifted on a houseboat in the middle of the lake on quite a few occasions. I'll drop 15 lb lines with whole anchovies but never had a bite. I was in some pretty deep waters in certain areas. 300+ feet. Using ocean reels with 15 lb test, I couldn't even reach the bottom, and this is with 4-6 ounce weights.

Best regards,

Paul
