I just heard that the have shot a bear they believe to be the same one that killed the boy. Hounds are now tracking the wounded bear.

That sure could be dangerous, at least they have dogs to help find the wounded bear. My heart goes out to the family of the 11 year old kid. Sad day for a lot of families when they can't go camping for fear of other bear attacks, hope it was just an isolated event.

AMERICAN FORK CANYON - A suspected killer bear has been shot today, and rifle-toting wildlife officers and a pack of specially trained hounds are following the beast's blood trail.
The black bear is believed to have ripped open a tent and carried off an 11-year-old boy in his sleeping bag at a campsite late last night in the Timpooneke trail area of American Fork Canyon. About 7 a.m., a volunteer hunter with the search team shot what was believed to be the renegade bear in a tree; the animal ran off, leaving a blood trail behind near the northeast tip of Mount Timpanogos.
John Childs says he wounded the bear with a shoulder shot from his 35-caliber Remington rifle. Hunters are trying to locate the animal with the aide of several bear hounds. The canines are equipped with radio collars and let loose to pursue the bear; searchers can use the radio signals to detect hounds that may have stopped to confront the animal.

Posted: 1:04 PM- AMERICAN FORK CANYON - Rifle-toting wildlife officers and a pack of specially trained hounds have cornered and killed a bear thought to have mauled a boy to death.
In what was believed to be the first ever Utah fatality involving a black bear attack, the animal reportedly ripped open a tent and carried off an 11-year-old boy in his sleeping bag at a primitive camping area late last night in the Timpooneke trail area of American Fork Canyon.
About 7 a.m., a volunteer hunter with the search team shot what was believed to be the renegade bear in a tree; the animal ran off, leaving a blood trail behind near the northeast tip of Mount Timpanogos.
Shortly before noon, according to the Utah County Sheriff's Office, hunters and hounds closed in on the wounded animal and killed it. A helicopter was being dispatched to retrieve the bear's remains.
Earlier, after a Utah Highway Patrol helicopter spotted the bear, John Childs says he wounded the animal with a shoulder shot from his 35-caliber Remington rifle. Hunters are trying to locate the animal with the aide of several bear hounds. The canines are equipped with radio collars and let loose to pursue the bear; searchers can use the radio signals to detect hounds that may have stopped to confront the animal.

[cool][#0000ff]Wanna know the real tragedy of the story? DWR could have prevented that kid getting killed. Someone else had camped in that spot the night before and had a bear raid their camp. They reported it to DWR but nobody showed up so they left the campsite. There was nothing posted to warn other campers that there was a bear in the area...and the people who lost their son had no idea they were in danger or that there had been a bear in that camp the night before.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]In most camping areas around the conntry it is recognized that once a bear loses its fear of humans and begins raiding camps it needs to be removed. If not, it is only a matter of time before there is an "encounter".[/#0000ff]

What a horrible thing to have happen. It really is too bad the DWR didn't do anything about the report the day before.

The DWR di make an attempt to capture the bear. A friend of a guy I know was the trapper trying to locate the bear with his dogs the day before this horrible thing happened. He apparently felt that the bear had fled the area and dark was coming on so they were prepared to trap him the next day. My prayers go out to this family, Sometimes things happen that nobody has control over.

That is Sad, if the DWR knew about the bear and did not close down the camp site or area, it sounds like they made a big mistake and it cost that young man his life. I'll be amazed if there isn't a law suit that come out about this.

I FEAL FOR THE SURVIVERS.

This is exactly why i carry a gun ALWAYS!

thats what im going to do sleep with it right besides my pillow

I thought the paper said that the bear tracker could not find it and quit for the day after the first incident, but I could be wrong.
[signature]
the DWR could have saved the boy's life and saved some face if they would of just closed the campground down. Making sure the bear didn't come back. just my 2 cents worth.

[cool][#0000ff]You are partly right. I was reporting what I heard on the news, but they did not say anything about a tracker after the first incident. But, there was only one tracker with two dogs and they quit at 5 o'clock...quittin' time. As soon as they got off the trail the bear doubled back to the campground and killed the boy about 11 o'clock that night. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If there had been a closure or at least a warning, the people who took the empty spot would probably not have camped there.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]It is easy to criticize and offer suggestions after the fact. In fairness to DWR and the forest service, there was no reason to suspect that the bear would come back so soon. That is not typical behavior. But, they were wrong wo we can blame them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I am sure that those tragic events will serve to make everybody more aware of what CAN HAPPEN, and maybe get the officials to alter how they treat bear incidents.[/#0000ff]

I agree that it should have been blocked off.
