I have been fishing so much (and working) I keep forgetting to post. Anyway I fished OXBOW a few days ago for Crappie and Smallmouth. This turned out to be one of my best fishing trips ever!! The Bass were running from 1-4 lbs all day long. Many 2 1/2 - 3 LB fish!!
Smallmouth:
Morning....any top water ....up close. At times I could see 3-5 fish chasing the fish I had hooked. Much Fun
Afternoon....any soft plastic anywhere there was 20-30 of water with a drop off. In other words fish the shelfs that have a drop off to deeper water.
Evening....CRAPPIE....
I took my boat up to the spillway (of the Browning Dam) there were 6-7 boats there fishing. I watched for a while and saw two guys in a very old boatand wearing straw farmer type hats catching a lot of fish. I went up to them using my troll motor and asked how things were going....just then a crappie hit one of the guys rods. He says to his partner.."need the net"...Oh! I say "you got a Bass on..."Nope ....it's a crappie". This was the biggest Crappie I have ever seen. It had to be at least 14" . They had TWO 5 gal buckets full!! ......Ok...may I ask what you are using? They look at each other like "should we?".....they do and I caught 25-35 LARGE crappie over the next hour.
And now for all of you here is The Secret OXBOW Crappie Bait...I call it Straw Hat Crappie Food!!
They were using meal worms with the head pinched off so they could cover the hook on their 1/32-1/16 plain jig head with the meal worm...topped off with one white crappie nibble. They let this rig drop to a 12-20 count and then twich it just a little and BANG almost everytime. The bow of their boat was facing the spillway (almost right on it using an ankor) then casting to the long wall on the right,Oregon side.
I think this rig would work anywhere....give it a shot and let us know.
If you like to SM Bass fish I think Oxbow may be the Best anywhere in the western states.
