The season to take both soft shell and snapping turtles in the Upper Peninsula will be open from July 15th through September 30th. Size and possession limits can be found on page 13 in the Michigan Fishing Guide.

Southeast Lower Peninsula
Lake Erie - Walleye have been caught along the edge of the shipping channel in 20 to 30 feet of water. Most are using a bottom bouncer with a crawler harness tipped with a worm or leech. Walleye have also been caught in 17 to 19 feet of water out in front of the Fermi Power Plant when slow trolling or drifting. The better fishing has been in the early morning or late evening. Smallmouth bass are hitting on crawfish or rubber gobies with salt. Shore anglers looking for largemouth bass and catfish should try Point Mouillee and the State Game Area.
Detroit River - Has good perch action in 16 feet of water around the southern tip of Celeron Island. Many are reporting 20 to 50 fish per boat with most fish averaging 9 to 11 inches. Those fishing the mouth of the river have caught good numbers of smallmouth bass.
St. Clair River - Anglers are taking some limits of walleye. The better fishing has been during the first couple hours after dark.
Lexington - Perch are being found in about 40 feet of water south of the harbor and around the wreck. Salmon and trout are in 80 to100 feet of water.
Port Sanilac - Salmon and trout are in 80 to100 feet of water and perch are just starting to hit in 20 to 22 feet of water just south of the harbor.
Harbor Beach - Anglers are catching lake trout along with the occasional walleye, but angler activity has been light.
Port Austin - Lake trout anglers are doing well in deeper waters. Those looking for walleye are going 5 to 7 miles west to fish on the Hat and Flat Iron Reefs.
Saginaw Bay - The hot weather forced anglers to fish the deeper waters. Those fishing from Pinconning to Bay Port were heading out to the middle of the bay to fish around the Second Spark Plug which is out near Buoys 1 and 2. Crawler harnesses along with blue and silver Hot-n-tots were both producing fish. Good numbers of walleye are also being caught in 17 feet of water along the Coryeon Reef and in 16 feet of water in the Slot. Bass anglers are doing well on a variety of lures near Bay Port in 6 to 10 feet of water. At Caseville, those trolling with crawler harnesses are still getting walleyes off Oak Point.
Saginaw River - Some channel cats were caught near Essexville.
Southwest Lower Peninsula
St. Joseph - Chinook salmon are being taken while trolling waters 70 to 130 feet deep. Perch fishing remains good while fishing in waters 20 to 30 feet deep using minnows. Pier anglers searching for skamania are using shrimp or cut bait. Those fishing in the early morning or very late at night are casting J-plugs or spoons.
St. Joseph River - A couple steelhead have been caught but the river is low and warm, so fish aren't moving. Walleye fishing has picked up above Pipestone Creek. Smallmouth bass fishing is excellent and catfish are hitting at night.
South Haven - Salmon fishing has been good in 80 to120 feet of water using green, blue and purple lures. The best color for steelhead is orange.
Grand Haven - Has good perch fishing.
Grand River at Grand Rapids - Walleye fishing is good at the Sixth Street Dam even though water levels are low. Fish are concentrated in the pockets and deeper holes. Try floating crawlers underneath bobbers for channel cats, walleye and smallmouth bass. Steelhead were caught using glow-in-the-dark tubes in early morning between 4:30 and 5:30am. Steelhead are being caught off the rocks when using pink yarn and flies. Pike fishing is good downstream by the log jams when floating spinner baits. Flathead catfish are biting on suckers, alewives and live gizzard shad.
Reeds Lake - Good numbers of perch are being taken from the north side of Sunken Island at the 40 foot drop off.
Grand River at Lansing - They are still catching panfish, large and smallmouth bass when using small spinners at the Grand River Park on Lansing Road. Fish are still being caught on stink baits at Moores Park and the bridge at Waverly Road. From the boardwalk at Francis Park, bluegill and smallmouth bass can be caught off the bottom using crawlers and leeches.
Mona Lake - Has good fishing for walleye and channel cats.
Muskegon - Chinook salmon have moved into deeper waters, 100 to 200 feet. Best baits are flashers, flies and spoons.
Muskegon Lake - Bluegills are biting on jumbo panfish worms in 15 feet of water. Smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing is good in deeper waters around structures and weedbeds.
Northeast Lower Peninsula
Rogers City - Fishing is fair to good. Try fishing straight out from the harbor, the Pump House, Seagull Point, the state park and north past Forty Mile Point lighthouse. Most are fishing 65 to 90 feet down in waters 65 to 120 feet deep. Good colors are green, pink, orange and silver, purple, black and white. Use anything that glows early and late. The best success is on downriggers 30 to 65 feet down. Look for structure in cooler waters.
Presque Isle - Good places to fish have been straight out from the harbor or north between the two lighthouses.
Rockport - Anglers fishing around Middle Island and the Nordmere Wreck are catching chinook and lake trout in 80 to 100 feet of water. Most fish were taken right along the bottom or about 60 feet down. Green seemed to be the color of the week.
Alpena - Boat anglers are fishing for walleye in front of the harbor. Most of the fish have been caught on spinner baits. Lake Huron is producing salmon and walleye, but the fish seem smaller than in previous years.
Thunder Bay River - Walleye anglers are fishing from small boats along the entire river. Natural baits seem to work best. Smallmouth bass, freshwater drum and channel cats have been caught along the shoreline.
Long Lake - Is producing some nice walleye and smallmouth bass.
Beaver Lake - In southwest Alpena County is reporting good numbers of walleye.
Fletchers Floodwaters - Has good northern pike fishing.
Grass Lake - In Montmorency County has excellent bass fishing.
Harrisville - Anglers are picking up a few lake trout when using spoons just off the bottom in 75 to 130 feet of water. The further north of Harrisville you go the better the fishing has been. Rumor has it a few salmon were caught up near the Black River.
Oscoda - Lake trout have been caught but no limit catches to report. Most fish have been caught off the bottom in 90 to 120 feet of water. No reports of any coho, steelhead or pink salmon. Pier anglers are catching sub-legal smallmouth bass and walleye. A few catfish and freshwater drum were caught on crawlers and leeches.
Tawas Bay - Trollers using rapalas are getting some walleye in 15 to 20 feet of water along the weed beds off Jerry's Marina. They are also finding bigger walleye out near Buoy 2 in 35 to 50 feet of water on crawler harnesses. A large mayfly hatch took place around the bay last week.
Au Gres - Phenomenal walleye fishing continues with most action in 35 to 45 feet of water. Crawler harnesses are most productive and limits are being taken.
Au Gres River - Anglers are catching good numbers of bass.
Higgins Lake - Lake trout are still hitting on large cowbells in deep water. Brown trout are being taken off Big Creek. Catching some perch in 50 to 55 feet of water. High winds have kept fishermen off the lake.
Houghton Lake - Good walleye fishing in the morning and evening using Hot-n-Tots and crawlers harnesses. Bass and bluegills are also being taken. All the fish were in deep water close to the weeds.
Northwest Lower Peninsula
Thumb Lake (Lake Louise) - Anglers have been targeting smallmouth bass in the shallows casting crawlers, spinners and tubes in depths ranging from 10 to 15 feet along the camp shoreline and shallow flats in the east basin and the along the west side of the west basin. Bluegill anglers are using crawlers, minnows, and leeches in 10 to 15 feet of water near the camp and the narrows. Shore anglers have caught perch and rock bass.
Traverse City - Chinook salmon have been caught 70 to 80 feet down in the East Bay when trolling blue or green spoons and Hootchie Mama's with flies. Lake trout and a few walleye have also been caught. Bass fishing has been very good. Due to the festival and the high volume of pleasure boat traffic in the West Bay, fishing has been slow. Look for fishing activity to pick up in the next week or two.
Leland - Boat anglers are catching salmon. Try fishing around North Manitou Island. Spoons and flies have caught fish. Green, blue and orange have been good colors.
Frankfort - There are good numbers of alewife in the harbor, so pier anglers fishing with slip sinker rigs are taking good numbers of brown trout, chinook and even a couple steelhead. Boat anglers have caught trout and salmon 10 to 18 miles from shore. Some are fishing between the piers and Point Betsie in 80 to 100 feet of water. Spoons and flies are producing the best.
Onekama - Some nice lake trout and chinook have been caught up in the Barrel and straight out from the piers. Anglers trolling in 125 to180 feet of water 45 to 60 down had the most success. Cut bait, spoons, and flies have all been producing fish, with good colors being blue/gold, blue/glow, pink, black/gold, and chartreuse.
Portage Lake - Bass fishing continues to be good throughout. Anglers trolling for walleye and pike had the best luck in the afternoons and late at night on the south end of the lake. Big bluegills and sunfish are still being caught on wax worms and crawlers, but look for them in deeper waters.
Manistee - Pier anglers have had little luck with salmon and trout but have been catching rock bass on wax worms and minnows. Trolling anglers had some luck straight out and a little north of the harbor in 60 to 90 feet of water for chinook, steelhead, lake trout and a few brown trout. Some are trolling south of the harbor.
Ludington - Pier anglers have had little luck jigging for perch. No salmon and trout have been caught in a few days. Boat anglers trolling south towards the Project have caught trout and salmon in 50 to 90 feet of water.
Upper Peninsula
Torch Lake - Walleye fishing has been good slow trolling crawler harnesses in 8 to 14 feet of water. Bass are being taken in the cuts and canals.
West Portage Lake - The North Bar to southwest of Grosse Point produced good catches of walleye. Most were caught back trolling with crawler harnesses over the reef, although some were taken by drifting and jigging with lead head jigs of various colors and half a crawler. There were also good catches of walleye trolling with planer boards and crank baits in 30 to 40 feet of water along the west shoreline from Chassell to Pilgrim Point, and also the Bootjack shoreline. Some pike were also caught on the west shoreline. Nice smallmouth bass were taken casting crank baits or top water baits between Dollar Bay and Ripley.
Marquette - Salmon fishing has been slow, and those targeting them are catching lake trout when trolling in water 150 to180 feet deep using spoons or flies. Some are also being caught in water 40 to 60 feet deep. Fish are averaging 3 to 4 pounds.
Munising - Lake trout fishing has been fair around Wood Island. Fish caught range from 2 to 4 pounds. Perch were taken in Murray Bay.
Au Train - Fair success for lake trout when trolling off the backside of Au Train Island with spoons, cowbells, and peanuts.
Au Train Lake - Lots of small pike are being caught with the occasional keeper. Anglers are still catching a few smallmouth bass and small perch.
Grand Marais - Pier anglers are still picking up a few whitefish in the morning and evenings and lake trout fishermen are catching their limits 3 to 4 miles offshore in waters 120 to 140 feet deep.
Raber Bay - Herring were caught on both the east and west side of Lime Island. Try a red teardrop tipped with a wax worm in 18 feet of water in the early morning. Good walleye fishing was reported in 22 feet of water off Raber Point when using orange or chartreuse bottom bouncers with crawler harnesses.
De Tour - Has good walleye fishing with limit catches reported in Scotts Bay and on the north end of Peck Island. Try an orange bottom bouncer with a crawler harness in 12 to 14 feet of water. Limits of herring have also been caught around Cedar Island, Maple Island, and Long Island. The better catches were taken in 18 to 22 feet of water with a red teardrop tipped with a wax worm.
Cedarville and Hessel - Pier fishing activitiy has been heavy due to anglers catching northern pike, yellow perch and pumpkinseed in 5 to 7 feet of water. Those anglers going as far out as Goose Island for salmon are coming back with decent catches. Smallmouth bass and northern pike are biting in Musky Bay, off the points, and along the shoreline when casting or trolling with dark green or brown tube baits. Herring are biting in Government Bay, the end of Moscoe Channel and McKay Bay in shallow waters. Try a wax worm or mayfly on a red or orange teardrop.
St. Ignace - Anglers are reporting good catches of salmon when trolling from the city launches in St. Ignace to the Coast Guard station, the east side of Mackinac Island and the southwest side of the bridge. Best baits are green/gold, blue/silver, or blue/green spoons or light blue and white flies with silver flashers.
