Celebrate Maryland Conservation Corps Completion of New Boardwalk at Point Lookout State Park

Visitors to Point Lookout State Park in St. Mary's County will be able to get to experience a salt marsh up close and personal, thanks to a new 420-foot boardwalk built by the Maryland Conservation Corps (MCC). Constructed to connect to the existing PeriWinkle Trail, the new boardwalk provides scenic views of the park's wetlands and tidal ponds. An AmeriCorps program managed by the DNR's Maryland Park Service, the MCC is made up of young adults, ages 17-25, who spend 11 months working in crews throughout the state to plant trees, restore shorelines and streams, provide environmental education programs, and maintain and construct hundreds of miles of trails annually. For more information about Point Lookout State Park visit http://www.dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/...okout.html

FOR CURIOUS KIDS

Ask an Expert: What Exactly are Wetlands?

Wetlands are typically defined by the presence of saturated soils and vegetation which is specifically suited to wet conditions. They are home to a family of unique plants known as hydrophytes that have special adaptations which allow them to live in areas where they are inundated with water for extended periods of time. Wetlands can be very expansive, such as the Lower Eastern Shore's tidal marshes, or narrow fringes along a river or lake edge. Why are they important? Find out more at http://www.dnr.maryland.gov/mydnr/askane...tlands.asp

The Bay Game - It's Back and Better Than Ever!

Now in its 11th year, the 2007 Maryland Bay Game takes readers back nearly 400 years to the time when Captain John Smith and his crew first explored the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. FEATURED SITE: National Homeless Animal Day (August 18)

Celebrated each third Saturday of August, National Homeless Animal Day draws attention to the heartbreaking plight of the millions of unwanted animals crowding the nation's shelters and rescues. And organizations such as The International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR) are doing all they can to tackle this problem head on. Founded in 1959 to expose and end the injustice and exploitation of animals and the suffering inflicted on them, the ISAR has become a leader in the fight for animal rights. Millions of healthy animals are killed in shelters and on streets each year, simply because they are unwanted. If you and your family are considering adopting a companion pet, be sure to check out your local shelter first - you are sure to find a wonderful animal there just waiting to love and be loved.
