Hey Mactuna,

I am from Utah as well. Comins is a decent 4 hour drive but worth it for Pike. Hardly anyone likes the pike that were illegally introduced in this lake. It is a great rainbow trout fishery with some football size trout in it. I have seen pike larger than 40 inches through the channel there. I have also talked with the fisheries biologist there and he has given me great information. They want you to keep all pike caught and do not release them. I wont though. Only keep the bigguns. Even then, I can get a fiberglass mount that is just as nice. I hope they keep it a pike fishery. No one will like me for that comment though. Oh well, leaves more pike for me. If you ever want to give it a shot, let me know.

Maybe we can meet up and take a trip to Comins. I was investigating things about the lake, pretty interesting.

Regarding releasing pike back into Comins Lake. That is a real mistake. When pike were first introduced to Comins around 25 yrs. ago, about the only thing in there were chubs by the bajillions. Within 7 or 8 yrs. the pike had literally eaten themselves out of forage. It was nothing to catch a 24" pike that wouldn't be nearly as big around as your wrist. They are able to reproduce there to the point that they will again overwhelm their food supply and stunt or starve. While this is taking place any trout stocking will wind up at least 90% pike fodder. I grew up in Ely & am pretty sure I know the clown that put the pike back in Comins. Too bad he wasn't caught & strung up.

I agree there needs to something done for the trout fishery. I remember all of my friends up there ice fishing and catching huge rainbows just 3-4 years ago. I do not hear of that anymore. I will gladly take all the pike out I catch. I just like to fish for them and tiger muskies that any other fish. Do you know of any good spots on comins? I have caught some in the southern part of the lake on the west side in that brush there. There have been tons in that channel between the upper and lower ponds. My friend said it looked like an alligator just under the surface. Probably a little excited. I know some big ones exist though.

hopefully the have a law like yellowstone which states if you dont immeditally kill the pike(illegal lake trout) after catching its a $500 fine

illegal stockers/bucket biologists should have their fishing privlidges revoked forever, and they should pay for the damage, for commins, thats prob hundreds of thousands

I disagree. Fishing is my favorite thing to do but i hate to eat fish as does my family. I strictly catch and release, that is why I do not use power bait or worms. Even if they make that rule, you will see me release all my fish as I would rather not kill them. I know they could be killed just by my releasing, but their odds are better by my release with flies and rapalas. You can go ahead and kill all the pike you catch but I will not. Live to swim another day as it should be.

michigan has passed a law where you can not release non native fish back in to the water, which means if you catch a goby it is unlawfull to release it back in to the water live or dead.

It is a law of futillity, as to how many people follow this law, who knows. As well it is hard law to inforce, you have to have a CO or a person willing to spend a couple days in court testifying.

Goby has destroid the perch population and habitat in michigans great lakes.... perch are fun to catch even if you dont eat them.

You might want to ask a neighbor or two even a co worker if they would take and clean a pike if you caught it,,, they are boney but are still mighty taisty....[Tongue] Ya never know, they may even throw a fly or crank bait your way for your efforts...[Wink]

Sure they belong there. They are there now until they poison the lake and start all over. I do like to catch them and I hope they stay. Minnesota does not excite me. You could always move to Utah or Idaho and catch some real trout as well.

[cool]Hey southerman, I agree with you completely. I have heard of the great trout fishing that WAS at Comins until the pike were put in. You were almost guaranteed to catch a 4 to 5 lber went you fished. I'll be going up that way to do some scouting for deer and am planning to fish Comins for about half a day. I will kill every pike that we catch. I will also keep one or two to see how they taste. I like catch and release at times but this is not one.

Loving this post! I try not to get fired up about the politics of fishing or other anglers actions as long as they follow the rules. Now that I'm back in town I pledge to return to my cuSade of killing every striper I can legally catch at Lake Mead. I have no problem killing fish and I love to eat them. Fish tacos rock!
