Hematite beads (black iron oxide) which are used for jewelry are very heavy.

I checked with an environmental engineer and he said that it's better than using lead.

Just go to eBay and search for "hematite beads".

Don't pay a lot for them. They are produced in China and a 16 inch strand of perhaps 50 beads shouldn't be more than $10.00, and probably less.

Note for tacke store owners: why don't you contact the manufacturers in China and have them make a bunch of them per your specifications?

You may also look into the Glass or Australian Crystal for some good beads too.

I do like the sound of the Hemetite beads. They do come from the earth and would just be returned if they get lost in the water.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful idea.[cool]

but so dose lead [angelic]
and oil
acid
sulfer and brimstone

one of the major problems about putting lead in fresh water is the acids that are being dumped in to the water.

under normal circumstances lead dosnt break down in water, it takes high temps or acid to break it down, that is why you are not susposed to eat lead.

but lets face it, we eat ducks geese phesents and rabbits, we have all bit in to lead shot at one time or other.
