[cool][#0000ff]Swedishfish beat road, LloydE and myself out to the end of the dike at Lincoln Beach. It was still dark when I got there and the other three guys were ahead of me. I like that kinda dedication. Fishfinder462 actually met up with me in the parking lot and followed me out. The whole gang was ready to rumble even before daybreak. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Road launched first. I was right behind him. Water temp was 71 at launch...warming to about 74 by noon. Air temp was a comfy 65, with just a light easterly canyon breeze from Spanish Fork. Kept the bugs away for a while anyway. Forecast was for strong south winds. We were hoping to get in a couple of hours fishing before it got too bad.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I powered across to the area by the reeds and started tossing a small jig spinner. About the second cast I got a nice whack and hoped for a wallie. Nope. The first of about 30 - 40 little white bass for the day. I got more of the same in short order and the reports over the walkie talkie confirmed that the other guys were finding willing whities too.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I was also dragging a minnow on one rod, while pitching lures with the other. Hoping for a walleye or cat on the minnows. Nope. Nuttin' but pesky whities molestin' my minnows. Kept catching more white bass, including some large enough to keep for dinner.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I finally changed from minnow to carp meat. Good move. Had a couple of small pop and drops from whities, and then the line started running out through the guides on my bait rod. I muttered something to myself about %&$#& white bass and set the hook. WHOA! My rod tip stayed where it was and my line zinged off the reel against a stout drag. Not a whitie. That 24" mama cat weighed just under six pounds, but she kicked my behind like a ten pounder. Great battle. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]That was about 8 AM. I figured the cats would turn on then. Nope. Nothing but whities for me the rest of the day. I did have one other runner but did not get the hook into it. Stupid inexperienced fish just didn't know how to hang on.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]About 9 AM, I heard some loud whoopin' and hollerin'. I looked up to see LloydE locked in mortal combat with a large fish, which was doing a lot of splashing to keep Lloyd whoopin'. Turned out to be a dandy 22" walleye that weighed in at a healthy 3.3 pounds at the fillet table. Since Lloyd lives for walleyes, that fish made his day. He could have gone home a happy man at that point.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Fishfinder called out on the mike for someone with a net. He had hooked a large kitty over near the reeds and had left his net home. Silly boy. Guess he didn't believe us when we told him there were bigguns in there. Anyhooters, he was not planning to keep the fish so he tried to lift it aboard by the line and the small jig hook pulled out.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]He hooked another nice one a while later and I powered over to hand off my net and my lip gripper so he could at least pose for a picture. I did, we did, he did and we all did. Good show. I guess it was about 22 inches and maybe 5 pounds. Nice kitty. Still swimmin'. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We joked all morning about the slow catfish action being the result of the heavy south winds. Ha ha. In truth, there were only light breezes, and they kept changing from different directions. About 10:30, we actually had semi serious north breezes. Just when we noticed and commented on that, they stopped and the anticipated south wind came to life. Within minutes it was stirring up some popcorn. Fortunately, we were all within easy reach of the landing spot and the wind was blowing us directly to it. Piece of pie. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Swedishfish had to boogie by 10:30, so he didn't get windblown. He also did not have a barnburner day of fishing. I understand he caught some white bass...like everybody...but I would have sure liked to have seen him go bendo on a biggun.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I will let the others tell their own TRUE stories. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Lots of fun guys. Looking forward to Tuesday.[/#0000ff]

Nice trip guys! I assume the red throne was comfortable today?
[signature]
[cool][#0000ff]Oh yeah! After last trip, I cut about a half inch off the front edge, to lower the front end. PERFECT. Rides like a dream. I really am not sure I will need any additional cushion or padding. I did not get a tired behind at all today.[/#0000ff]

I just want to thank everyone I met today. This was my first BFT Floatilla and I hope to become as much of a regular at these events as work & wife will allow. I'm trying to figure out how to make it to the real deal on Tuesday. [Wink]

As TubeDude said, I caught a bunch of dinky white bass; but I still had a lot of fun.

Congrats goes to LloydE on the nice walleye.

Again, it was nice meeting you guys and putting some names to faces.

Hey TD I forgot to tell you when we went ashore, when you guys go out there on tuesday there might be a catfish out there slashing tubes with a pocket knife, I dropped mine in the drink[Sad]. I thought about swimming for it but figured it would be hard to find with that muddy bottom, o'well gives me an excuse to buy a new one. It was great to meet all you guys, look forward too doing it again sometime[cool]. And i'll make sure to bring a net next time.[sly]

[cool][#0000ff]Man, what a visual. A punk catfish waving a knife around. As if they were not dangerous enough already. Way to go, bro. Arming the enemy.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Glad you could join us and look forward to some more trips in the future. [/#0000ff]

[font "Lucida Console"][#ff4040]Looks like you guys had a fun time! Nice to see that there are wallies still out there to be caught, and also nice to hear that the whities are starting to make a comeback too![/#ff4040][/font]
[font "Lucida Console"][#ff4040][/#ff4040][/font]
[font "Lucida Console"][#ff4040]Congrats to LloydE for picking up that nice eye!![/#ff4040][/font]

[cool][#0000ff]About time for you to dust off that float tube and join us.[/#0000ff]

Hey if those cats have to train themselves to hold onto a pocket knife, they should be able to hold onto my hook on Tuesday. Let them train I say.

I had a great time at Utah Lake. Not only did I catch a beautiful walleye, but I met some new friends as well --swedishfish (Ryan) and fishfinder462 (Brian). I was planning on fishing with TubeDude and Road, but when we added Ryan and Brian to the group, we ended up with a small flotilla of five. It was great fun! The weather was much better than I anticipated it would be, the fishing was great, and the company was terrific. Thanks Pat for the minnow and carp bait, for cleaning my fish with your electric knife, and your continual mentoring. Your fishing knowledge and experience are legendary! Thanks Marty for the insect repellant when mine wouldn't work, for the friendship and fishing knowledge you constantly share, and for the loan of your filet knife.
Great Fun!

1st let me sorry for the late post. I got home and the mrs said I had some honeydos to take care in the big city. So off we went and didn't return home until late. I was way tierd by then so I went to bed.

Well It's pretty much as TD posted. The only real difference is LlyodE and myself were the 1st arrive.

Once again no kitties for me not even a bite this week. Only saw a few carp all loners and no pods to target either. I was beginning to think I was at the wrong lake!! Except for the whities who are still in there and wanting to play.

I managed 20 or 30 whites most of them on the small size. Kept half a dozen for dinner put the rest back for the rest of you to go and catch.

Swedishfish was having a time of it when I floated next to him. He asked what sz jig head I was using as I was having a little better luck the he. He down sized and started catching fish right off the bat. I don't know how many he ended up catching. In the short time I was close by he must have had 5 or 6 he brought to his tube.
Nice to have met ya Ryan. We will keep it seceret about your next fishing purchases. You may need to get your own Cabelas card and a post ofice box. Just kidding guys and gals.

At any rate i took about 1/2 a dozen pics. Most of which didn't turn out. Cut the heads off, cut people in half, was shaky and got a blurred picture. But I'll add what did. Hey TD sorry I cut ya in half on the one pic. I haven't a clue as to why my picture taking was so awful yesterday.

My pleasure LlyodE. Hope I sprayed enough bug juice so you didn't get bit. I just hate it when that happens. Buy something and it doesn't work.
No problem on the knife thing. I wish I could remember ALL the things I left at home. I think that come from being excitied about going fishing.
I still have trouble getting to sleep before a planned trip. Waking before the alarm goes off. Sometimes I think I am still ten years old (that was my 1st fishing trip with uncle Ray). What one remembers.

[font "Lucida Console"][#ff4040]We'll just have to wait and see on that...gave my tube to my brother who was visiting from California.[/#ff4040][/font]
[font "Lucida Console"][#ff4040][/#ff4040][/font]
[font "Lucida Console"][#ff4040]So I guess you can say that I'm kinda...sorta...on the market for one right now. Plus there are many things going on right now. I will definitely let you know when the time is right tho![/#ff4040][/font]
[signature]
[cool][#0000ff]If you find yourself in need of some serious on-the-water therapy, just let me know. I have extra everything...tubingwise...and as long as you have a fishing rod and a license I can get you afloat and fishin'.[/#0000ff]
[signature]
[font "Lucida Console"][#ff4040][cool]Thanks for the offer Pat...I might have to take you up on that one of these days. For now..let's just let things settle down a bit.[/#ff4040][/font]

[cool][blue]I guess that would make you "clueless". Maybe you better look in the "clues closet".[/blue]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Cameras are like kids and spouses...sometimes unpredictable and never work when you want them to. The half shot of me (I am usually half shot) was probably the result of pushing the button too soon after taking another picture. It had not finished recycling and preparing for the next shot. You depressed the button when you wanted to take the picture, but the camera took it's time and the shot was made a couple of seconds later than when you pushed the button.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]That's my best guess. Doesn't work in figuring out kids and spouses either...or fishies.[/#0000ff]

I probably ended up with no more than 10 whites. I caught almost all of them while we were by each other. You are right though, down sizing my jig head made all the difference. I didn't catch anything previously. Although, I can see why TubeDude pours his own with larger hooks. When I down sized to a 1/16 ounce head, the hook was really small. When I caught the fish by you I was tipping the jig with crawlers, later I ran into TubeDude and he gave me some perch meat (Thanks Pat). The bite picked-up again for awhile after that, but I wasn't able to set the hook on any of them. I thought about it later and wonder if it had to do with the size of the hook. The perch meat was a lot firmer and thicker than the crawlers and took up more of the gap on the hook. I'm not sure the hook was as effective after that.

Does anyone know if you can buy smaller heads with larger hooks on the internet somewhere? Or am I going to have to use the new Cabelas card and have some jig pouring equipment shipped to my post office box? [Wink]
[signature]
Unfortunately pre made jigs come with the sz hook the manufactures thinks we need. Cabelas does on occasion have light jigs with bigger hooks. But they go fast and you have to stop by regulary in hopes of finding them in stock.

I too am going to the jig making route. I have a coulpe of jig molds. But am currently using the primitive method of melting lead. So i don't make many. I have recieved an offer to help me out with the molds I don't have. So my next purchase (after rod balnks) will be a melting pot.

Looks like ya might be scorching that new card. But check with Sportsmens they are now carring a whole lot of molds. 2 years ago I had to special order one. Now they have at least 12 different ones on display ... and wat less money than I paid. Also look online there are some great resources. Why I think you even know a guy who may be able to help in this. Hey TD is it getting time for another jig making class?

Clueless in Heber ehhhh. Tried the clue closet it was locked. Dang women anyway.

I bet you are right about not waiting long enough for the camera to cycle. It's not like the old 35mm. But getting the pics are way cheaper.

I'll work on it AGAIN for the next trip.

What a fun time you guys had. You make it look so easy. Good to see that the Tuber Fambly is growing.[cool]
