so ive had an exciting weekend...not really. i helped move my best friend into his dorm at the university of alabama, and while i was down there, i decided to go fishing. i neglected to remember my fishing license, so i got a citation. crap. anyways, before i got cited, i was thinking bout the line i had. it was the pre spooled 25lb line that came on my zebco 808 magnum reel. well, it kept catching in the reel, limiting my casts, so i was thinkin, and i remembered the 30lb spiderwire braided line i had back at home. it had given me all sorts of crap, but the equipment i was using wasnt rated for it. i began thinking about some ugly braid, a line that was recommended in the lil info packet that was attached to my ugly rod. my rod is rated 8-20lb, and the rod is obviously at least rated 25lb lines. so if i got some ugly braid in 20, maybe 15lb sizes, would it cast as smoothly as a mono line, or would it catch and severely limit my casting and make me want to chunk the whole thing into the river?

You need to be careful about which rods you use braided line on. Some of the types of braid will dig into the guides and mess them up.

If you are having all that trouble with the 25lb test on your reel, it would be better to down size the line a few steps. I would recommend some 15 or 17 instead.

Many times, the line that is supplied on a reel when you first buy it, is usually junk. Lots of memory and lots of curls when you cast. That can mess up your cast big time.

Try some smaller line and tell us how you do.[cool]

i will, cuz i've already taken all that 25lb stuff off. so ill stop in at wally world on my way back from school today.

Be sure to pick up some good Trilene. Strong line and low memory.[Wink]

ahhh yes, a recommendation! now i wont be lost in the dark lol. yeah i will stop and get some trilene in the 15lb area on my way home from school...i dont know if the cats are gonna be biting tonight, but it never hurts to give it a shot. i can at least test out the new line lol. next off day i have from work, which may not be for a very long time, im gonna go at about 4am again, and start fishing for the cats then. i know around 7 they're biting in one area

I caught these little guys on some 8lb Trilene. They are only @7lbs each but have the pull of a 30lb fish. They do have sharp teeth too. These are Pacific Barracuda.[cool]

i got some 17lb. trilene. i have a couple of questions though...first of all, what is memory related to a line? also, the line i got is fluorescent clear/blue. i saw it turn a bluish color in the car. is the color to attract fish underwater, or is it something that glows at night? and im off friday morning, so im going fishin at about 4 am. im riggin up both lines for cats, and im just gonna do it for about 4 to 5 hours, then come back and go to class.

Memory is the amount of curl left in the line after casting it out on the water. The really cheap lines will look like the curly hairs from a doll at the toy store. The more memory in the line, the worse it is.

It is preferrable to have a line that remains straight after casting.

The color concept in lines is to help it dissappear underwater while remaining visible out of water.

Good luck out there and tell us how you do.[cool]

thanks bro. ive seen the high memory stuff, so now its perfectly clear. fishing for 4 or 5 hours in the same spot where ive seen a guy catch 10 plus cats over many days, maybe ill get lucky and catch one...

[black][size 3]I'll back up tubeN2 on the Trilene in 14-17 pound test for what you are doing. 25 lb is probably too big for anything you are fishing for, and too small for anything you are dreaming of catching some day in the way of catfish. Line that heavy is often difficult to cast on any thing except a casting reel and you would need to have a fair amount of weight in order to get any distance at all with it.[/size][/black]
[black][size 3][/size][/black]
[black][size 3]Also, as was pointed out, the line that is usually supplied with the reel, is most likely not of a very high quality and has probably sat on that reel for way too long, and the memory that has set in is not going to go away. When heavy line gets memory, get new line.[/size][/black]

[size 3]The Clear Blue Florescent Trilene is a good night fishing line as it shows up well under light (florescent or black light especially). It will not really show up much better during the day than regular clear line. Another thing, catfish are not line shy and won't really be bothered by a line of any color.[/size]

weeeeeeelllll, im off tomorrow morning, and my dad flipped out when i told him i was going fishing at 4am, because i have classes tomorrow, and he told me"i know you, when you dont get enough sleep you're incredibly grumpy." he's only seen me without enough sleep when i didnt really want to be up. if i want to get up, im up and there are no problems...so ill have to go tomorrow night after i work, or wait til saturday morning and go at 4am, before i work then too...i may go anyway tomorrow at 4. i wanna do it, so ill be fine. arrrrgh...i was just gonna go pick up some lighter line becuase the 12 lb line on my other closed face rod turned into a slinky when i let it off lol

That sounds like the way I am. I am up at 3:30 every morning to prepare of my fishing. If I have the day off, I am still up by 4:00am to go fishing anyways.

On the weekends I get up at 2:00am to go out on the fishing boats in the ocean.[cool]

holy crap dude! you must go to bed really early! saturday i work at 10am, so i think ill try to go out bout 330 or 4, that way i can really get some fishing in. if bass are more of a night fish, maybe i need to try that again. but i already have both lines rigged up for cats. i need to buy another pole to put the other reel i have on it. is there any suggestions? i like the sturdy feel of an ugly stik, but i havent caught anything on it, so i dunno. im lookin for one rated for 12 lb line. something probably better for bass fishin than catfishin. and if i am bassfishing, do i need to use a bobber or a float? or just let it rest on the bottom then jerk it up? that one's for future reference lol...

I usually sleep by 11pm unless it is Friday night. Then I sleep by 9pm.

As far as a good combo, are you using spinning or baitcasting equipment??

I have some good recommendations for both.[cool]
[signature]
im using spinning, closed face reels. man i can't wait for all these really useful tips you've given me to all just click and i catch fish lol

You may want to consider the Okuma Halogen spinning combo. The part number is HGS-862M-40. It has 5 ball bearings in the reel + 1 for the line roller. The combo is only $85. It will handle 12lb just fine. That is a medium action set up.

If you like a little stiffer rod then you could go with the Okuma Halogen HGS-701H-40. That one is a 1 piece 7 foot rod whereas the first one is an 8'6" rod and 2 pieces.[cool]

hmmm....i'm unable to order anything offline, so if its not available at wal mart, discks sporting goods, or any places like that then i wont be able to. kinda makes things hard [Sad]. there's not a bass pro shop up here, though i am going to tuscaloosa again to pay off the citation for the fishing without my license--because the officer didnt turn in the ticket after he told me i could go pay it the next morning...that just made the day worse. anyways, they have a huge sports store down there called academy sports, and they have boats and stuff like that, and a much bigger selection of stuff, so i will look down there. i also wont have $85 to spend on it. again, makes things tough. but i guess i should start catching fish with what i got before i committ suge a huge sum to it, because one of these days i may just snap and throw it al in the river [laugh]
