Wiperslayer and I fished Willard today from 4pm till 9pm. We started off trolling by the light pole and found the deepest water was 13 ft. but we were marking a ton of fish. We figured they were shad because it was the only thing that we could use to explain the shear number of fish we were seeing but not getting a bite.At times the screen would go almost black with the number of fish. They were not in the balls we were seeing earlier in the summer just huge schools. I think some of these marks had to be wipers but wanted nothing to do with our lures so we trolled to the S/W corner marking fish the whole way. We made one more pass along the West dike then along the North dike and headed toward the island. We made one pass around the island then went over North of the Feed lot and started trolling again. We made it to the East dike by the freeway by sunset and decided to call it a day. As Ira was reeling in he said, I think there is a fish on and sure enough there was a very fat 17 inch wiper on but it fought very little. We sure thought that was strange but at least be got the skunk off. I started reeling mine in and low and behold there was a wiper on it too. Again, not fighting much but a couple of inches larger and fat. We tried casting in the area thinking they might still be around but that was it. It was a good way to end the day. Water temp was 79* when we arrived and dropped to 72* by sunset. It was a nice afternoon on the water, fairly cool with little wind most of the time. Launching wasn't a problem although the mouth of the channel came up to 2.5 ft before it dropped back into deeper water. Only saw two other boats on the water and one of them was a water skier, sure enough, they just had to go between us and the shore line[mad]. It sure was nice to get out there again, it had been a while. I wish the catching had been better but thats fishing at times. We talked to a couple of people at the launch as we were leaving but they had no luck but were also seeing lots of fish on their finders. Maybe the wipers will thin the shad out some by fall and the catching will be better but I doubt it[unsure], there is just too much feed in the water. WH2
