Thanks to one of the area's charter boats excellent report about sturgeon fishing Saturday the 25th (five sturgies to the boat), I figured it was time to get off my a$$ and go catch a sturgeon! So I did.
I headed down river aboard my C-Dory from Brannan Island State Park to the area of Garnet Point on Suisun Bay, about a 75 minute cruise. It was a wonderful summer day with light winds. I planned to spend the night, but after four hours of fishing an incoming current, I hooked into one dynamite little male sturgeon that - honestly! - fought like a hundred pounder. When he first took off, he was just unbelievable. I'd have bet he was too big to keep.
But after 10 or 15 minutes he blew it all and was at the boat, exhausted. I used my little floating tape device to decide he was legal (46" - 66"). He measured 52" and weighed just 30 Lbs! I've never fought such a strong, little male sturgeon that was so tough. His power was awesome.
I caught him on nasty, old lamprey eel that has been in my freezer for the better part of a year. Nothing bothers it but sturgeon. I love the stuff. There is no cheaper sturgeon bait!
One sturgeon tag down, two to go...
