I now have trilene on all of my lines, and it works great, however, the 17lb is still catching and not dispensing cleanly on the zebco 808 magnum reel....
[signature]
Maybe you spooled to much on? You also got to be a little careful with those closed faced reels that your line doesn't loop and tangle inside (usualy as a result of overspooling). Just one or two loops wrap around themselves funny, you got a little hang-up in your cast.
[signature]
the 17lb has given me problems from the start. first i didnt spool enough, and it caught, then jkust came off completely, now i have too much on, and im taking it off as fast as i can, the release button is open letting line go, and its just not getting any easier. it sounds like the drag is engaged almost...
[signature]
I never realized that they had a Zebco big enough for 17lb line. You may need to back it down to 10 or 12lb for that sized reel. It wasn't designed to effectively use bigger line.
That "Drag Catching" sound is the line getting over zealous inside the enclosed chamber.
Do you have any open faced reels? You would have much better success with the casting. They are easy to get used to once you practice on them.[cool]

yeah the berkely rod has an open face on it, and its doin fine. its what i hooked that monster fish last night with, but it got loose as i was getting it on the shore. anyways, the zebco came prespooled with 25lb line, 17 was backing off. im gonna take a lil break from fishing though. tonight i lost a lot of gear, and in a fit or fage i snapped my smallest rod and threw it in the river...i may go fishing saturday morning like i planned, but im scared that im gonna get up that early to have a repeat of tonights 45 minute escapade..
[signature]
Lmao I hate days like that..
well good luck man.
[signature]
If I'm not mistaken, that particular Zebco is supposed to be good for 120 yards or so of 25lb line...I just kind of hate closed reels for the reasons being discussed. There is so little room for the line to move around as it un-spools, and to much potential to for it to catch on something. Want my honest advice? Next fit of rage, take that Zebco off, chuck that in the river, and go pick up an open face reel [
]. Or, take all the 17lb line off, and go down to a 10 or so. Its thiner line, and wont catch up inside the reel as easily and will cast much further and much smoother. And you'll still have the ability to land 30 lbs+ fish. Just play them out with the drag a little more.
[signature]
i got a new thing of 14lb, you think that would do better? sometime soon ill have to buy a new rod, and ill get a big open face reel and put the rest of that 17lb on it.
[signature]
Its worth a try. Make sure you keep a little tension on the line as your spooling it up also. A little pressure with your thumb and finger will help keep the little loose coils down and improve castability a little
[signature]
well crap, its worth a try! ill spool it up then go outside and try a cast. if it seems to be working i may go fishing tomorrow night or saturday. got homework to do tonight, couldnt go if i wanted too.
[signature]
alright, that does it. im emailing zebco to tell them what a piece of crap their product is. i put 14 lb line on the 808, as per suggestion, and the reel cut that, losing more of my tackle. and im probably not going fishing tomorrow morning either, the fish weren't biting tonight, probably wont be tomorrow (if you think differently TELL ME! i still have the 404 reel which hasn't given me any crap!) i still' would like to catch a channel cat and cook it up, but if i cant get a hook with bait on it in the water and it still be attached to the rod on the shore, there's no point.
[signature]
Sounds maybe there is manufacuring flaw in the 808. Try and get your money back...In the mean time, why not just use the smaller reel? Like I said, you can still catch big fish on small tackel.
[signature]
yeah i probably will. i emailed zebco last night telling them about the crap its given me and i asked for either assistance in fixing the current reel or a new reel altogether. im gonna get another rod sometime, and it will accommodate an open faced reel, which will be a shakespeare alpha that ive seen. the one on the berkely rod is an alpha, just smaller, and its always worked well.

yeah if the email gets me nowhere i probably will call. i put the 404 on the ugly stick where the 808 was, and i caught 3 brim and a white bass on it. btw, are brim a good eat? and if so, any recipes? i catch them more than anything. and is there anywhere i can find out what gamefish are out in the winter? i read that blue cats were, which is what i catch anyways, but im just wondering if there's anything else that i could aim for and not catch until a few weekds before winter is over lol

I beleive your problem lies with the spinnerhead, It may have a sharp egde or a factory manufactured bur on it. I would pop the top off and look at the Spinner head, take it off and feal for any sharp edges or burs that could posibly cut the line. the other area that can cut the line is the eye hole comming out of the reel or any eye hole along the rod. Check all of these areas for sharp edges or burs enven cracks that can catch and cut a line when it becomes streched a little. Just one othe question, you do put thread the line though the cap when spooling on new line and put the cap back on befor spooling? If you dont you risk cross threading the line and it will snap from the inside of the reel and you will never figure out what happened. This can also cause casting problems as well. click for larger image This is my zebco 808, as you can see it is older than dirt. still fighting fish like a champian. if you find any sharp edges they can be worked out with a stone or honing file. look to see if the pins are groved. another thing that can happen is line twist. if you are not using a barrol swival or swival snap line twist can accure in side your reel, causing a loop around one of your thread pins. this is even more posible with stiffer lines. so depending on the grade of 17 pound test line you got you may have gotten a trolling line that line twist is just about a given on most every cast when spinning reels are concerned. If you still have the box the line came in, check to see if it is high abraision resistant. If it is you deffenantly have the wrong line on your reel.

yeah i always make sure the cap is on before i start spooling up. thanks, im gonna get it out and check for those problems....though i dont think the problem would be any of the guides on teh rod, i put the 404LE reel on there and it worked fine, even caught a white bass and a bunch of brim
[signature]
what modle of trilene did you get?
I know it says 17 lb. but what else dose the box say?
there is a set of numbers and a name.
What you picked up may not be compatable with a spinning reel.
