i know i post a lot of threads, if thats a problem, just let me know and ill chill. but where i fish im not having much luck, and i want to go somewhere else, and ive been reading on an alabama outdoors website about creel limits and stuff. first of all, whats a creel limit, and if im catching and releasing, not keeping any of the fish i land, do i need to worry about it? i know my luck would probably be better at a different locale, and i want to catch more fish.

The Creel Limit reffers to the amount of fish that you can keep from a days catch. There are size limits or minimum size requirements and there are slot limits which limits you to only keeping fish that fall withing a certain size guidline.
Since you decide to catch and release, which is good for the species, there are some simple suggestions on how to do it properly.
Catch and Release Guidlines
1. Decide to release a fish as soon as it is hooked.
2. Land your quarry quickly; don't play it to exhaustion.
3. Set the hook immediately. Try to prevent a fish from swallowing the bait
4. Work a fish out of deep water slowly, so it can adjust to the pressure change.
5. Use hooks that are barbless and made from metals that rust quickly.
6. Always keep release tools handy
Handling your Catch:
1. Leave the fish in the water (if possible) and don't handle it. Use a tool to remove the hook or cut leader (use extreme care with a large, dangerous fish).
2. Keep the fish from thrashing.
3. Net your catch only if you cannot control it any other way.
4. When you must handle a fish:
Use a wet glove or rag to hold the fish.
5. Turn a fish on its back or cover its eyes with a wet towel to calm it.
6. Don't put your fingers in the eyes or gills of your catch. Larger fish can be kept in the water by holding the leader with a glove or by slipping a release gaff through the lower jaw.Avoid removing mucous or scales.Get the fish back in the water as quickly as possible.
7. Protect against personal injury by handling each species carefully and correctly.
Removing the hook
1. Cut the leader close to the mouth if a fish has been hooked deeply or if the hook can't be removed quickly.
2. Back the hook out the opposite way it went in.
3. Use needle-nose pliers, hemostats, or a hookout to work the hook and protect your hands.
4. For a larger fish in the water, slip a gaff around the leader and slide it down to the hook. Lift the gaff upward as the angler pulls downward on the leader.
5. Do not jerk or pop a leader to break it. This damages vital organs and kills the fish.
Finally
1. Place the fish in the water gently, supporting its mid-section and tail until it swims away.
2. Resuscitate an exhausted fish by moving it back and forth or tow it alongside the boat to force water through its gills.
3. Use a large hypodermic needle (or similar tool) to vent the expanded swim bladder on a fish taken from deep water.
4. Watch your quarry to make sure it swims away. If it doesn't, recover the fish and try again.[cool]

im fishing from the shore, so the whole boat thing isnt really a big concern. but the limit means i cant take a picture of it before i release it?
[signature]
Why not?
there is no reason why you cant take a pic before you release. Just get it done under a minute.
I usualy have the piture taken and the fish released in under 30 seconds. But I go with the intention of taking a fish pic, so I have my camera ready,
If you ever get around to using my camera, dont get it to close to your face, It kinda smells like fish...
you do have to watch the regulations, some states you cant target or fish in some waters unless you have a license for that particular fish.
meaning for example, here in michigan you need to have a trout and salmon license in addition to a regular fishing license to fish for trout in designated trout streams and lakes. non designated trout streams you can fish in with a regular license but if you catch a trout or salmon you have to release it.
now we have a stergeon in our great lakes and inland lakes, You may not target them with out first having a tag for them, the tag is free for now, but the DNR wants to know exactly who is fishing for them, how many people are fishing for them, and the exact number of fish and exact size and weight of the fish being kept.
Ya it sounds like a headache, but honestly it isnt, the hard part is getting your hands on the tag with out having to drive a hundred miles out of your way. You have to pick it up in person and show ID to pick up the free tag.
so far they have not limited out on the tags they have printed, but the day that happens we will have to pay for them in lottery form much like we do for elk tags in michigan.
Point is, it is vary important to focus on special regulations even if they dont pertain to you.
and by the way, keep throwing them questions at us, we just love to feel needed...[

and if you want the beard to go with the title, wash your face every day with cold water, and when you start growing your beard, wash that with cold water too, if your tap water isnt cold you can always take a wash pan and throw a few ice cubes in it.... I will even wash my beard in the snow before I go in the house...[shocked]
Ya, I like ice fishing.... [center][url "http://www.bigfishtackle.com/photos/showgallery.php/cat/553"]

im the type who gives credit where credit is due.
and my dad says apparently i just cant grow a beard--neither can he. it just looks like really bad hair.

My pa can't grow a beard either. However, I can (but due to military regulations I"m not allowed too). Probably from all that shaving with ice water in the field since I graguated Highschool. Apparently cold water is the secret [

apparently so lol...ill have to try it...be funny if ya caught a fish with a lil beard.

You can always take a picture of the fish that you are throwing back. You can also take a picture of anything that you consider as table fare.
Catch and Release fishing is called C&R. When a camera is involved we change it to CPR fishing. Catch, Photgraph, and Release.
If some thing makes it to the dinner table we call it C & E. Which is short for Catch and Eat.
Certain species are best when they are thrown back to grow. Others are good to use to practice our recipes on.[cool]

im just leery of all this, because i dont want another citation for some arbitrary lil thing that i didnt know about.

Nothing to worry about Bro. The release of a legal species is always optional. You won't get in trouble for adding a picture in there.[cool]

i hope so...you know some enforcement agents can be a-holes. lol

hold on to your belt, I have tied flies with strands of my beard. [shocked] in the summer time when it gets hot shedding is a thing that both me and my husky have in common...[laugh]

go to your state web site and down load a copy of the regulations for your area, anything protected quite often the state is intrested when and where it was caught and released. that kind of info is valuable to them. photos size and weight is the info they like to know when reporting a protected fish being caught.

Posting a lot of threads is never a problem. It's always better to ask than be

.
A creel limit is number of fish from a certain species that you are allowed to take in a given day. Takeing a fish can be counted in 2 different ways. The first is keeping it for later killing and consumption (or for bait use in some instances). It also includes killing a fish, which in some instances can occur inadvertently in landing it. If you have taken the max creel limit, and you continue catching & releasing and happen to accidently kill a fish, you would be violating the creel limit regs.
As long as your releasing the fish without any avoidable injuries, your fine, you can do that all day long.

Jealous there Paulpro. But weight fish can require more handling or miss handling. Bigger trout should not be held vertically (tail or Jaw). That is where you net them, then while cradled in the net, weight the net and the trout. Don't even need to touch the fish.
There are calculations however. Get girth and length you can get a weight.
