I am going down to SoCal this weekend and will be going deep sea Thursday night to Friday. I was wondering if any of you Utahns had been down lately and would be interested in your recommendations. Supposedly the ocean has been extremely rough due to the hurricane's but it should be better this weekend. We are debating between chartering a small boat out of Ensenada or doing on overnight open party out of San Diego. We want some yellowtail, Mahi or tuna. Any comments/recent reports will be appreciated.

Do the San Diego charter. There have been several car jackings of American tourists in Tijuana in the last couple weeks. Anglers with guns to their heads on the side of the highway, very scary stuff. Try H&M or Point Loma Sportfishing in San Diego.

Did you check out BFT's Cali page? Be sure to ask over there.
Do a search for SoCal fishing forums. I've been to a couple but do not remember the website. Good up to the day information. There are also H&M, Seaforth, Pt. Loma websites that have the daily counts for the past week. What boat caught what and how many. Also the angler count so you know if it's a party or private.

I don't know much about Mexico anymore. To dangerous, I stopped going several years ago. Better to buy the licence and cross the border while sitting in the lounge of a fishing boat out of SanDiego.

I am checking all those sites but you know that the landings won't give much negative information. I am just looking for personal observations from BFTers who will be honest. Don't want to waste the money to have my dad get sea-sick real bad. Thanks.

Seasick? I don't take the chance so I wear a patch. Used The Legend, Out of Seaforth Landing. Good captain that will put you on fish.

[#500000]I've been a couple of times on the El Capitan with Captain Alan Fay on the 1.5 day trips.....We caught over a hundred tuna and Dorado each time out but we were out in June or July so I don't know how the fishing is right now.[/#500000]
[#500000]They run out of Point Loma in San Diego.....I far prefer this to Ensanada.[/#500000]
[#500000]Don't take any chances with the seasick stuff...Get a patch, get some gingertabs, and get the pressure bracelets.....I am prone to sea sickness and if I do all three I'm fine, and I can have fun......Don't get seasick......[/#500000]

Some friends who live there have said the were catching Albies 3 days out. All other species within an overnight trip.

Thanks for the input everyone. I am still a poor student and we don't have the funds nor the time for a multi-day excursion but hopefully in a few years. At this point we have narrowd our choices to an overnighter from a San Diego landing or chartering a 4-6 pack for between $600-700 out of Ensenada which also goes overnight. We are leaning towards Ensenada as we love yellowtail and dorado and we have done the long boat rides for albecore to do 4 hours of fishing and don't want to do that again. Hopefully I'll have pictures of a good fishing trip to report.
