Work takes me to Craig, CO next week and I may try to hit some of the local waters. I know this is the Utah board, but I also know that many of you have fished this neck of the woods. I will also post this on the CO board.

Looking mostly for some out-of-the-way fishing, which probably means rivers. I will only be able to fish in the evenings, like after 5:00 pm. I'm most accustomed to targeting trout, although I'm open for other species (pike in the Yampa, etc. ?). The flyfishing colleague isn't going, so I'll be flipping jigs and lures, etc. I also don't mind driving a little, but time constraints and daylight limits post-work travel to 45 mins or so.

Anywho, just wondering if anyone has some suggestions or can at least point me in the right direction--location, tackle, or otherwise. I've asked questions like this before and you have come through big-time. So...thanks in advance!

Thanks,

The yampa used to be real good for pike. But the DOW has been shocking them for the last few years to save the pike minnow and some of the other stinking trash fish. I've heard of some smallies still being caught but not sure where. If you go toward Steamboat you can get into some amazing trout fishing. But I haven"t been up that way in years. Stagecoach res. near Steamboat has some very large pike and trout in it. If you drive about 50 miles soth to Meeker the White river can be real good for big browns. It has quite a bit of public access to the east on county rd 8. If you bring a fly rod and some small nymphs (phesant tails, prince and brassies) you can catch white fish until you're blue in the face on the Prather access area. About 16 miles up cnty rd 8 is Avory lake. It has allot of 12-16 inch rainbows and a few crappie and bluegill. A real good place to go and catch a bunch of fish. Finally 20 miles to the west of meeker is Rio Blanco lake good for pike and bass. Most of the pike are hammer handle size and the bass can go up to 5 pounds.
