The Indiana DNR's Coastal Advisory Board will meet today, September 19, at 6:15 p.m. CDT, at the Marquette Park Pavilion in the Miller area of Gary, 1 N Grand Blvd.

The focus will be on the Coastal Grant Program project pre-proposals recently submitted to the Lake Michigan Coastal Program for the 2008 funding cycle. The Coastal Advisory Board will discuss the merits of each of the many projects submitted and decide which to invite for a full project proposal.

The LMCP is an annual competitive grants program that awards up to $750,000 to units of local government, regional and state agencies, colleges and universities, and non-profit organizations. LMCP funds may be expended on low-cost construction, land acquisition, and planning and coordination projects. Projects must be located entirely within the Lake Michigan coastal area, the northern portion of Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties.

The LMCP is housed in the Indiana DNR Division of Nature Preserves and funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Office of Coastal Resource Management. The purpose of the Indiana LMCP is to preserve, protect, restore and, where possible, develop the resources of the coast for this and succeeding generations, and to achieve wise use of the land and water resources of the coastal region, giving full consideration to ecological, cultural and historic values, as well as to needs for economic development.
