So what's up with the tiger trout in East Canyon? Is anyone catching them?
My parents live just below the dam, so I have fished there quite a bit in the past; but not too many times in the last couple years. I'm curious if you can go up there now and catch a tiger.

You know, I don't think I have ever heard of anyone catching a Tiger Trout out of East Canyon. Wonder what's up with that?

But tons of tigers were planted. Maybe the smallies ate them all up. Or the rainbows. Rainbows at East canyon tend to be predatory rather than plankton feeders. Stomach contents show numerous small fish.
While few people are catching tiger trout(TT) while trolling at East Canyon(EC) we did catch a few during the past winter. I don't know if the TT in EC are like the ones in Causey but they seem to feed near the bottom and from my experience are rarely caught more than 10 feet above the bottom. So I would say your best bet to catch a tiger there would be fishing at or near the bottom and trolling is not the way to go if that is what your after. We did the best using smaller jigs tipped with a piece of nightcrawler, if you are in a boat, try water that is 15 to 30 ft deep, near points. That is what worked for us during the winter but this time of the year you might also catch a bass or two[
]. I can't tell you if this method will work while fishing from shore but there is a good chance it will. It seemed we caught a lot more bows than tigers, so don't be surprised if you catch more rainbows. Good luck SF and let us know how you do. WH2

Ya, I looked at the stocking reports. While no tigers have been planted in 07. It looked like more tigers were planted in 04, 05, 06 in East Canyon than any other reservoir or lake.

Thanks for the tips. I don't have a trip planned yet, but if I do go it will be from my tube or my Dad's boat. We are headed up there next weekend to visit the family, so if the weather is right maybe I will go out and give it a try.

Someone reported catching some earlier in the summer or spring. Maybe try a search on e.c. tt.[
] Can't remember who it was.

So I did a little searching as you suggested... A few have been reported being caught through the ice and Troutlover tried back in May but didn't report any success.
I wonder what's up with that, given how many have been planted. Maybe it is not working out and that is why none have been planted this year.

my buddy caught one trolling but only one, about 15incher, he was down to 40ft deep trolling with downrigger. the rest were all rainbows, this was in probably july or august of this year.

I've been out there at least three times now. No tigers[
], some nice sized bows though[
].

i caught one through the the ice that was about 10 inches this winter and right after ice off i caught about a 3 lb 18incher down near the inlet on downrigger, caught probably 100 trout this year there and only 2 tigers.

Places with tons of bass in it, the trout planted just end up being meals on wheels for the bass and larger trout. I was up there one time when they planted and 20 mins later I think all the bass in the lake where right at the spot and full.

I think we need to go do a little research this winter... [

I'm still trying to get to the bottom of this issue, but it seems the data shows that there has been very little "return for our investment" in putting tiger trout in East Canyon, as many anglers have experienced.
That alone may have caused a decision to put tiger trout in other waters until a larger size fish is available from the hatcheries. There is another person I need to talk to to confirm this, but I'll keep you posted when I find out more.

Thanks Foofuraw. It is nice to have your input.

I was up at East canyon this weekend and caught a few Tiger Trout in the river coming into the lake. The fishing was great this weekend up there.

I was in the area visiting family over the weekend and hoped I might get a chance to sneak away and fish for awhile, but did not.
Glad to hear you had some success.
