Hello,

I've been fishing locals lakes & ponds my whole life. Recently, I've been fishing some rivers around here and it seems as if the bait I'm using on the rivers doesn't work like it works for the lakes around here.

A have a buddy that recently got some property on the Patuxent River and he has a nice pier in which we were throwing off of yesterday afternoon. The bass were jumping all over the place, but we never got a single hit. The currents are real strong where he was at.

This is a beautiful spot and I'd love to catch some fish there, but nothing was working.

What kind of baits would you guys recommend on rivers?

[black][size 3]A few questions just to clerify the situation so as to be able to make an educated guess at what might work.[/size][/black]
[black][size 3][/size][/black]
[black][size 3]1. What kind of bait were you using for lake fishing ?[/size][/black]
[black][size 3][/size][/black]
[black][size 3]2. What kind of bass are you targeting ?[/size][/black]
[black][size 3][/size][/black]
[black][size 3]3. Describe the immediate area where that pier is located ... i.e. inside/outside bend ? Straight river section ? [/size][/black]
[black][size 3][/size][/black]
[black][size 3]4. How deep is the river there and, are there eddies or visible current seams ?[/size][/black]
[black][size 3][/size][/black]
[black][size 3]5. Is there any structure nearby (not including the pier) like downed trees ?, rocky bank (rip rap)?, wing dams ? etc ?.[/size][/black]

Thanks for the immediate response!

I'll answer those questions in the order that you asked them.

1. When I fish the lakes around here, my favorite baits are poppers, but I crankbaits, plastic grubs & minnows, and plastic worms.

2. I'm targeting large mouth, but I like to catch anything to be honest with you.

3. The pier is located in a rather large bend in this river.

4. Off the pier, I am guessing the water is about 10 - 12 feet deep. The current is very visible. You can see areas in which a couple different currents are connect, with many different swirling spots in the water. Its pretty neat to see!

5. As far as structures, there are 2 piers on the property, about 50 feet apart. I didn't see any other structures near by. The pier is off of a large grassy area.

Welcome aboard and thanks for the inquiry.

That particular river is murky most of the time due to the amount of flow. I would suggest some Carolina rigging using the Carolina Keepers and at least a 3/4 to 1oz weight above it.

A Gamakatsu 2/0 hook and some Oxblood colored Yamamotos in the 4 inch length. You may get a little better action too if you use a Brush Hawg type of plastic.

Cast into the Grass areas. The grass is in the lower flowing spots and the Bass are more likely to hang out there.

While the sun is out and in full brightness, cast in the shadows. The Bass will always look for cover and structure.[cool]

Where on the Patuxent are you fishing? Is it tidal in your section?

Yea the area is tidal. The best way to explain it is that its almost like a little bay on the river, but you can see where the time comes in at. Its a pretty isolated spot. Not much boating traffic coming through the area. I'm looking forward to fishing there more.

they were jumping up at midges that were hovering over the water, this is the time of year midges return to the water to lay eggs and die.

using a fly rod and an ant like or black misqueto type fly, you will nail them.... dont be suprized if they jump right up out of the water and hit your presentation on the fly...

midges kinda look like a cross between a wasp, ant, misqueto all rapped up in to one little bug... Size wise, a midge is like a 1/16 of an inch long and about the width of a large needle eye. they are so small they can crawl though the hole of a screen window... a misqueto is a giant in comparison to a midge...

last time I was out the trout on the lake I was on was doing the same thing. It looked like a vandercamp fish comercial. all that action and could not buy a bite... I was wishing I had brought my fly rod with me on that trip, I only had 6 rods with me on that trip... just not the right one.. LOL
