Some of the rivers are at or near their peak for the salmon runs. The steelhead should not be far behind. Bluegill fishing has been very good. Anglers are reminded that lake trout season in the waters of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron closed September 30th.
Southeast Lower Peninsula
Lake Erie - Fishing remains fair as water temperatures are in the mid to upper 60's and water clarity is still poor. Perch are biting, but catch rates were on the slow side. Some fish measuring 10 to 12 inches were caught recently around the E-Buoy. Those covering a larger area have caught more fish. Channel cats are still being caught in the Hot Ponds.
Huron River - Those fishing the lower river have caught an occasional steelhead when floating wax worms under a bobber. A few chinook salmon were spotted but none have been caught. Bluegill fishing has been good as the fish are very aggressive right now. Walleye, bass and catfish have been caught.
Detroit River - Has fair to good perch fishing around Mud Island and Grassy Island. Most fish were caught in shallow waters 2 to 3 feet deep.
Lake St. Clair - Smallmouth bass fishing has been very good in waters 6 to 10 feet deep. Those fishing off the Mile Roads are targeting the rock piles and those fishing near the Middle Channel are targeting the weedbeds.
Lexington - When boat anglers could get out, they were marking fish close to the harbors but could not get them to bite. Fishing should pick up in the next couple weeks.
Port Austin - There are still salmon in the harbors, but strong winds have kept most anglers on shore. The next 10 days of so should be pretty good for those fishing instead of hunting. Pier fishing should also be good.
Saginaw Bay - Windy conditions made for spotty perch fishing. The better spots to fish were Buoys 11 & 12 at the Spark Plug and Buoys 9, 15 and 16. A few perch were also taken around the commercial nets off Linwood, the Black Hole and off Oak Point which is near Caseville. Bluegills and crappie were caught in the marina at Sebewaing.
Saginaw River - Channel cats have been caught in the lower river.
Southwest Lower Peninsula
St. Joseph - Anglers are taking a few fish in the early morning or late evening when trolling just outside the pierheads or when casting off the piers. They have caught a mixed bag of chinook, coho and steelhead.
St. Joseph River - The chinook salmon are turning darker which means the run is winding down. Light numbers of coho and steelhead are starting to show up. Boat anglers fishing between the Berrien Springs Dam and the Sportsmen Club have caught fish when back trolling with flatfish or Hot-n-Tots. Shore anglers are drifting flies or spawn.
Kalamazoo River - Recent rains pushed more fish up towards the Allegan Dam. Try casting small spoons or floating spawn under a bobber for a mix of salmon and steelhead. Smallmouth bass fishing continues to be very good along the entire river. The bluegills are aggressive right now and fun to catch.
Grand Haven - Boat anglers continue to fish around the pierheads and the mouth of the river for chinook and steelhead. Most are trolling with spoons or J-plugs. Pier anglers have caught fish in the early morning or late evening.
Grand River at Grand Rapids - A good number of fish are in the river but many are turning dark. Cooler temperatures and a good rain should push some more fish up into this area. Anglers are fishing up near the dam or concentrating on the deeper holes. They are casting Hot-n-Tots, rapalas, blue and silver Cleo's or anything that glows. Bluegill fishing continues to be very good.
Grand River at Lansing - The coho are in and the fishing has been good over at the point where the Grand River meets the Red Cedar River. Most anglers are casting spinners. Bluegill fishing has been hot. Try wax worms, leaf worms or red worms when fishing off the Boardwalk that runs along the river.
Muskegon - Boats trolling out in waters 80 to 100 feet deep have caught a mix of chinook and coho. The fish were taken on spoons about halfway down. Those trolling around the pierheads in the early morning have also caught fish. Pier anglers casting spoons off both the South Pier and the short pier near the Coast Guard Station have caught a few salmon.
Northeast Lower Peninsula
Rogers City - Most are still trolling in 10 to 30 feet of water in Swan Bay. Fish early or late as the fish are easily spooked. Some are running spoons about 8 feet down off the downriggers and catching fish. Good colors have been green, white, silver or black and white. Those anchoring are casting Cleo's, wobblers or bomber type baits.
Ocqueoc River - Has a few salmon in it, but most are still just outside the mouth.
Presque Isle - Not many anglers have been seen and so far no salmon to report in the harbor.
Alpena - Salmon, steelhead and walleye have been running in 40 feet of water. Black and gold dipsey divers or black and chartreuse lures have caught salmon and walleye. Steelhead were caught on green and yellow Hot-n-Tots with a red belly.
Thunder Bay River - Fish are being caught at the dam. Chinook salmon are hitting on spawn or red and yellow jointed rapalas. Water temperatures are still warm at 63 degrees, so the bite has been slow. Those lucky enough to find the salmon have caught fresh fish in the 10 to 13 pound range.
Harrisville - Boats trolling with silver J-plugs in the marina have caught a few chinook salmon. Those fishing outside the marina have caught walleye and pike.
Oscoda - Boat anglers trolling off the mouth of the Au Sable River have caught a few salmon. Most are trolling with spoons, rapalas or J-plugs in 10 to 25 feet of water. Pier anglers have caught a few chinook when casting Cleo's.
Tawas - Has seen very little boat activity. A few were trolling off the mouth of the Tawas River. Pier anglers have caught a few perch off the lake side of the pier.
Tawas River - Shore anglers fishing in the lower river have caught salmon when floating spawn or casting hardware.
Au Gres - Windy conditions have the perch fishing spotty. Anglers are marking good numbers of fish but the bite was slow.
Au Gres River - Anglers in small boats trolling up and down the river have caught a few salmon. Those fishing the East Branch have caught 12 to 17 pound salmon on a regular basis when casting lures or spawn in the lower Whitney Drain.
Higgins Lake - Some boats are still out trolling for lake trout, but angler numbers have dropped with the onset of hunting season.
Houghton Lake - This should be a good weekend to target pike and walleye. Look for the panfish such as bluegills, crappie, and rock bass in waters 8 to 12 feet deep.
Northwest Lower Peninsula
Petoskey - Those trolling a slim minnow plug in the harbor and out to waters 35 to 40 feet deep have caught a fair number of fish. Pier anglers and those surfcasting have caught salmon.
Charlevoix - The best technique to use at the Cement Plant is fishing spawn just off the bottom. Try using lighter line and small hooks.
Lake Charlevoix - Perch have been caught but the fish are scattered. Shiners are best if you can get them.
Thumb Lake (Lake Louise) - Anglers targeting splake were trolling in 40 to 60 feet of water in the East Basin. Fish were caught on smelt and minnows. Bass are hitting on spinners, rapalas and crawlers. The hot spots have been near the church camp in the East Basin and near Eagle Point or the access site in the West Basin. Pike fishing was slow but the bluegills were hitting on minnows and crawlers.
Traverse City - The East Bay has fair to good whitefish action in waters 60 to 130 feet deep. Anglers are jigging Swedish Pimples off the DNR launch site which is straight across from Acme. Small perch were caught in the West Bay.
Frankfort - Those trolling inside the harbor picked up a few chinook and coho but the fish are dark. Chinook were caught by those anchored in the bay and those wading near the old Elberta docks. Pier anglers casting green and white wobblers have caught fish. Chrome colored fish were caught outside the pierheads.
Betsie River - Has slowed some, but fish are still being caught all the way up to the Homestead Dam.
Onekama - On the calm days, anglers trolling the north end of the barrel have caught a decent number of silver chinook salmon. Those trolling out on the Shelf have also caught fish 120 to 140 feet down when using spoons or plugs. Hot colors were green and orange.
Portage Lake - Good numbers of perch are being caught but the fish are small. The big bluegills, sunfish and rock bass are hitting on minnows or wigglers in 25 to 30 feet of water. Anglers trolling along the drop offs are catching good numbers of pike along with a few smallmouth bass.
Manistee - Boat anglers have caught chinook, coho and steelhead when fishing along the Shelf. Those trolling in the harbor and up into Manistee Lake have also caught salmon. Pier anglers were taking fish when casting spawn or small spoons.
Manistee River - It's about peak time for salmon. Despite the warm temperatures, many salmon are now hitting the gravel.
Ludington - Those trolling in the harbor and up into Pere Marquette Lake have caught salmon. Boats heading out to waters up to 120 feet deep have caught chinook and steelhead. Pier and shore anglers caught chinook when casting spawn.
Pere Marquette River - Not quite seeing the peak of the salmon run here as it seems the river is a little behind this year, especially up in the flies only water. With significant rain, that could change.
Upper Peninsula
Portage Lake - Walleye fishing has been good one day and slow the next. Fish were caught on the Humps when using a jig with half a crawler. Some are trolling shad raps, reef runners and rapalas. Walleye anglers have caught smallmouth bass when jigging.
Falls River - A few coho are in the river. Only the section from US-41 to Lake Superior is open to fishing.
Marquette - Anglers are catching coho and lake trout when they can get out of the harbor. Green and silver spoons were good for catching coho salmon in the 3 to 5 pound range. Overall, fishing pressure was slow.
Dead River - The coho and pink salmon runs have peaked and the fish are turning dark. Anglers are now fishing for the fun of it and releasing most of what they catch. Good numbers of fish were caught on spinners, spawn bags and flies. Some big smallmouth bass were caught at the mouth.
Carp River - Chinook and coho have been caught but the action was slow.
Chocolay River - There were reports of steelhead in the river but no confirmation at this time.
Grand Marais - A few coho were caught as the action was slow. Chinook or steelhead were also caught.
St. Mary's River - Walleye fishing has been slow in Raber Bay. Surface water temperatures are still about 60 degrees.
De Tour - Boats are trolling in the shipping channel for chinook and coho. Those heading north of the launch towards Watson Reef have caught northern pike.
Drummond Island - Anglers targeting yellow perch are fishing off Grape Island, Harbor Island and Rutland Island. Try minnows in 22 feet of water in the early morning.
Cedarville and Hessel - Salmon activity is beginning to pick up but the perch fishing has slowed. Northern pike have been caught off the pier at Hessel and smallmouth bass were caught by those fishing off the rocky points.
Carp River - Salmon have started to move into the river. Fish can be found at the mouth and up near the McDonald Rapids. Most are using red and white or green and white spoons or silver J-plugs.
St. Ignace - A few boats are fishing the harbor and Coast Guard area with fair results. Chinook salmon are hitting on a squid with a flasher, spoons or J-Plugs.
