Does anyone know if Strawberry is known to have whirlings disease??? I was up there monday and caught a cutt that was badly deformed with the classic " S " shaped body.
Just curious, thanks

you should have taken it to the rangers and let them look at it.

the question should be was it in the slot or not that is if it was a cutt. I personally would not risk the ticket if it was in the slot honestly. I caught one last year a cutt that was all messed up like it had whirling disease. But I was told they can't get it like rainbows can.

Yes it was in the slot, and yes it was a cutt, not a rainbow.
If it were a rainbow I probably would have taken it to the ranger, but being a law abiding angler, it was released. That was the first and only fish ( cutt or rainbow ) that I have seen come out of Stawberry that looked like it had whirlings.
I guess I will take this opportunity to thank all on here who share their knowledge, tips, pictures ect. I have enjoyed logging on here occasionally to here the stories. It keeps me inspired and hungry to go fishing. And yes I have even benifited from some tips I've read... once again Thanks
Having said that, I will post my first report
Fished Strawberry on Monday from 1:00 to 5:00, weather was beautiful. Not so much as a bite for the first hour, then I started picking up a fish every so often, just enough to keep me interested.
Caught and released 17 fish, all cutts with a couple probably going over the slot. Most fish were caught on an orange tube jig tipped with worm, a couple on white. Also tried pointers, nothing!!
Bite was on the lite side with only a couple fish really slammin it.

[#0000ff]I will render an opinion on the deformed cutt. We have had pics posted in the past on "bent" cutts from Strawberry. I have discussed it with DWR folks and they offered two possibilities. First, cutts are not IMMUNE to whirling disease, but they are more resistant to it than rainbows. Second, it is highly unlikely that it WAS whirling disease in Strawberry. More likely a genetic deformity or an injury suffered while the fish was much smaller.[/#0000ff]

I agree with Pat, likely a growth abnormality (we don't call them deformities any more). I think, and if WnB or PBH will chime in I would appreciate the input, that whirling disease will cause the fish to go malnourished and die before they get very big. I think if the cutt was in the slot, it is likely some growth problem/injury (like scoliosis) that they can live and adapt with. Just MHO though.
