well tubn2 finally hinted at me going down to cali for some deep sea fishing one too many times so I started making plans a couple of weeks ago and am heading out for some deep sea fishing with him. I even talked my wife into tagging along this time so it will be fun to see her trying to haul in the bigger fish when she gets them. Last time I took her she had a blast and caught a ton of fish. I will try and post as many pics as possible. Oh and if anyone has any advice on gear for this time of year or any other tackle tips, I always enjoy reading them. I am going to try and tie up some dressed baithooks for the rockfish, but Haven't really had time to mess with it much. Anyway wish me luck,

[cool][#0000ff]Good luck.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]If Mama Nature behaves this is a great time for inshore fishing along that coast. I hope there is some water left for you to fish. California has been closing large areas to all fishing. Good for the fish, but very restrictive for the fishermen.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Just take a good assortment of heavy iron and jigs, along with the standard bait fishing setups. Of course TN2 will make sure you are rigged up right. If you can avoid his jinx syndrome you should score a lot of good eating fish.[/#0000ff]

Jed,
We have been using Megabaits in 3 1/2 and 6 oz. on rockfish and lings. Mackeral, sardine, purple and dorado colors have been killing. Huge white scampis are always a good bet if you are just targeting lings. Tip everything with squid. Fish Trap style jigs have also been working well for us. I like anything with orange and brown in it. Also, if you catch a smaller rockfish that's lively, send it back down on the Megabait. This is my best method to tag big lings.

So far every time I have fished with steve he has always lead me in the right direction and we have always caught fish. My fish goals this time are to catch at least one of these three fish if not all of them (a california sheepshead, a legal ling cod, and if possible a halibut).

Thanks I will try and pick some of those up if I can In time,

There is no jinx factor in the ocean. Like they say " There are plenty of fish in the sea"
Jed has been out here 3 or 4 times and always gone home with some quality Reds and other assorted Rock Fish.
We will be sure to get some good pics of this event.[cool]

I gathered a few pics of the last couple of weeks of ocean fishing. This is what you can expect to catch. The last pic was actually taken on this side of the border, not the southern side.

good luck to ya.. and what ever you do don't play cards with the deckhands down there on your way out to the islands! [sly] there dam good at winning!! [mad]..
just fun ya i allways had a good time fishing around the islands there.. some great rock fishing.. get some of them 6" tube jig's put 2 to 3 oz jig's in them.. probley have to get the jig heads there at the landing.. tip the tube with a big chunck of squid and drop it to the bottom and hang on.. ya can put 1 or 2 bait hooks above it as well so ya can hit 2 or 3 fish at a time.. yo-yoing a candybar in blue and white or scrambled egg allwas worked to..
have fun!!

just thought I would post some pics of my experimental flies for fishing the big rockfish and such. The big hooks are 6/0 and the small ones are 1 or 1/0. the mediums are 3/0,

[cool][#0000ff]Might be a bit large for Jordanelle perch, through the ice, but I think those ugly ol' rockfish will vote for them...and they all got big mouths and big appetites.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Nice work.[/#0000ff]

thanks I am going to try and turn out some more tonight, Any color suggestions?
Jed

[cool][#0000ff]All of the "hot" colors are good...at one time or another. I have always been most partial to orange and to a combo of chartreuse yellow and lime green. But, there are times that plain white works as well as anything.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]In water less than 50 to 60 feet deep, color or contrast can be important. In deeper water the colors mostly disappear and just using contrasting colors helps with the visibility.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]After that it is fishing a good large bait, and wiggling it so that it draws in the bigger fish. Most of the time they are active and feeding...but if they are (rarely) neutral or inactive you might need to change up the colors and/or your jigging action to create a reaction bite.[/#0000ff]

cool I will try that,

Nice. Try some tinsel too, or flashabou. you can also tie a silver or gold Hildibrant blade on just below the eye for flash and motion on the drop.

Do you remember those flies I tied last time?? I don't have a pic of them since all that gear is in Oxnard right now. The flies were orange based with red stripes and others with orange/pink.
Those simulate the small shrimp and some of the Hermit crabs that are at that depth. Many of the bigger rock fish have those crawling out of their mouths right now so that could be the key ticket.
Most of what I tie is on the Mustad 9174SS hooks. The standard 9174 hooks are OK but consider them as a 1 time use and pitch them after since the bronze will rust.
No matter what you've been told, "Size does matter"[shocked]
Most of my flies are on 2/0 - 8/0 hooks. That helps keep the scrubs off the line.
I'm all ready to go for Monday. I also have a backup plan just in case the regular boat cancels. I want to make sure that if I'm going to take a day off from fishing, to go fishing, that we can go out and fish.![cool]

yea I remembered those ones and used my memory as a basis for some of the colors I used. I also tried to incorporate a little bit of glow in one way or another on all of those flies,
