How many of you guys have significant others (wives or girlfriends) who are as interested in fishing as you are? I've been married for a little over 10yrs and couldn't get my wife to go fishing with my boys & myself on her worst/best day. Is there some kind a trick to it? I get excuses like: "their scary looking" or "they have pointy things" or "they bite" or "their slimy" etc. Am I fighting a losing battle here or what? If there's some kind of trick to get them to go atleast once to see if they like it, please let me know. Or maybe this is all just a big scheme on my part that if she would participate it would give me more excuses to buy more fishing stuff??? I don't know???

My wife loves to go fishing. Didn't have to convience her or trick her into anything. If fact most times it her asking me if I want to go. It's nice going out and enjoying the day together. And you are right in your thinking that it's easier buying tackle etc etc. But there is one problem with that.

Prime example from this year. I wanted to go pick up a new long rod for Salmon/Steelhead and a new pair waders. Well, if I was getting a new rod then of course she wanted a new rod too... I offered my old rod to her as her "new" rod but she's a smart little cookie and didn't go for it... ... poof before you know it I"m walking out the store with 2 new rods and no waders. That's right.. the second rod killed my wader budget. What I"m trying to get at here is having her there means also having to buy twice the gear which isn't always a good thing.

Your one of the lucky ones who's wife likes to fish. I figure if I could get mine to go just once & I get her hooked into a 30lb plus cat she would have to be hooked right? I see your point on the whole "extra" fishing gear scheme. That could backfire![unsure]

I got lucky... My wife wanted to learn to fish the moment i met her. She learned alot over the years and still loves it. Not as much time to do it now that we have small children but they are both old enough now that it will become a whole family event instead of just my son and me. My son has been fishing with me since he was 1 year old. I think he loves it more than i do. He is 4 and can outcast most of my friends and the people at the local pond..[sly]

As for getting her out ONCE, say something like "if you will go with me this ONE time, i will do whatever you want to do ONE time". Maybe, just maybe, she will fall in love with it and you won't have to do "her" ONE time thing.[Wink] Good luck.

I really recommend against trying to push anyone to get them into the sport. Let them knwo you're interested in teaching them, that your willing to show 'em good spots, give them tips, let them use your gear. Don't get naggy- that'll turn them off even more. Reminding them every now and then that the invite is open is good, but don't push the issue.

My wife just started getting jealous me getting to go out all the time... LOL... i still do but now she joins me on my adventures to get some fresh air every now and then.... obviously that's not working for you.... find something she likes that she can do on the boat or on shore if your fishing from there... like reading a book.... and when you get one on the line let her reel it in.... i think that would get her hooked. [Wink] it got me.

I feel for you man! My wife not only fishes with me, but she goes down rivers on her pontoon with me, tube fishing lakes, has a Gander Mountain Gold Credit Card and spends as much as I do on gear.
She can also shoot better than most guys I know and is fantastic at skinning and dressing her own kills.
I could not be married to someone who didn't share my passions.

I got mine to come out with me shortly after we met. I sat on the river bank with her all evening, and just had my line in the water the whole time. the next summer I bought her a rod and took her on fishing dates. After getting her hooked up to all sorts of different fish, she fell in love with the sport....

But as mentioned earlier, it means buying twice the gear....

I have two stepsons that want no part of fishing as does my wife. If they haven't gotten bitten by the bug, they just as do their own thing. I have tried all the tricks on my wife to get her to enjoy it and it's not in her blood.[Sad] But then I don't enjoy sewing.[Wink]

Well it looks like most have good luck with their ladies and fishing![cool] My wife likes to lay out and sun bath on the boat and that's probably the closet she'll ever come to fishing! What's a guy to do? Heck I'd even sew once to get her to try it. Thanks for all the input. Maybe I can try the whole bribery thing like " hey honey all I want for my birthday this year is for you come fishing with me just once". I just know if I get her latched on to one of those big cats she would have to be hooked (it's human nature man!!). Of course that would be my luck and would be the only day I get skunked all season.

Looks Like I'll have to burry the hatchet and deal with it.
