Fort Benning, Georgia - The world class rifle shooters of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit competed in the Creedmoor Cup and conducted a high power rifle marksmanship clinic for match participants Oct. 24 to 28 at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, Ariz.
Army Marksmanship Unit's Service Rifle Team members Sgt. 1st Class Lance D. Dement, Staff Sgt. William T. Pace, Sgt. Brandon K. Green and Spc. Matthew T. Sigrist conducted the clinic Oct. 24, which included safety, aiming, trigger control and positions.
The Creedmoor Cup competition started with an Excellence in Competition Match, in which Green tied for first but ended up in second by one X (an X is a bull's eye used in tie breaking.) Dement took third place.
Green was victorious over 132 other competitors and was the overall winner of the Creedmoor Cup Matches; Dement took second place in the overall 800-point aggregate. Dement won the 200-Yard Standing Slow Fire Match and Pace won the 600-Yard Slow Fire Prone Service Rifle Match. Green and Sigrist took first and second in the 200-Yard Rapid Fire Match. The USAMU Service Rifle Team won the Creedmoor Cup Team Championship. Sheri Jo Hurd, a future USAMU Soldier who will start Basic Training Feb. 8 and join the unit June 2, placed third overall in the Standing Match.
After the competition at the awards ceremony, the Soldiers presented a 50th USAMU anniversary commemorative hat and Army Strong shirt to Arizona local Army veteran Ben Wanamaker and Clela, his wife of 61 years, who were there watching the competition.
The matches were sponsored by the Civilian Marksmanship Program of Camp Perry, Ohio.
