Last saturday we hit Daniels reservoir from 7:00 am to 10:30 am, caught 10 to 12 fish each, ranging in size from 15" to 19-1/2" most fish caught on 1-1/2" Cut'r Bugs rigged on an1/8 oz round head in color #058, #040. at 10:30 am we were off the water and headed for Deep Creek Res. where we caught 25-30 fish each and had the best success using the 1-1/2" Cut'r Bug rigged on an 1/8 oz round head,in color#058 The fish were cruising the shallows, but did catch fish down to 15 ft. We kept a few fish and they were full of snails and some leaches as usual. The two biggest in the pics attached were 19-1/2" and 22" long 3lbs 10 oz and 3lbs 15oz. Most of the fish were covered with some kind of parasite, small black round spots on the skin and just under the skin. Anyone know what they are?

Hi James, man those are some very pretty fish you got there. Those spots you were talking about might be scars from Anchor worms. Thanks for sharing.

No their not from anchor worms, I have seen plenty of anchor worm scars from fish at East Canyon and Pineview over the last 30 years.
These are not scars, they are more like a little black seed pod under the skin. Some of the fish had them so bad that they felt like they had sand and small rocks stuck to them when you picked the fish up.

Looks like it was a great day on the water. We went up yesterday and between four of us we caught about 30 in three hours. It as a great time. The biggest we caught was 2 lbs. 11 oz. but most were between 1 and 2 pounds. Alot of the fish we caught had the same bumpy skin, I would be interested to find out what it is also. Is it a pretty popular fishery. We've only been there twice but it hasn't been very busy. It seem like the fishing is good enough that it would be packed. Is the fishing usually great or were we just lucky both times. By the way we were just using worms on jigs with a bobber.

The fishing there is usually pretty good, but like any other lake it has it's slow times. It has been slower this year compaired to past years. We didn't use any bait!

Did they look like this up close?

[black]Wow!! those look gross. [/black]

Looks to me like a good justification for catch and release.

Actually, because they all look alike, I would guess that they are some type of parasite on it's way in or out of the fish.

I think that I would want some identification on them before I dropped them in a frying pan.

That just gave me the shivers seeing those little parasites. Those are the kind of pictures that make me want to stay out of the water. What are they???

[cool][#0000ff]Purty fish but nasty skin. I suspect that the ailment is what is known as "Black Spot Disease"...strangely enough. It is a parasite that occurs in mud bottomed waters with a population of the host snails. If I am not mistaken, this is the problem critter in most of the water sources for potential warm water hatcheries in Utah.[/#0000ff]

Hey Pat you hit the nail on the head with this one. That is exactly what they are!
Thanks for the great info as always!

Thanks for the report. Now we just need to get you to post it on the right board. We don't want everyone from "south of the boarder" to realize the fishing can be fairly good in Idaho[
].
I've seen fish in Eastern Idaho at several places with with those spots but never a large number at Deep Creek. However, I haven't fished Deep Creek this fall.
Did you check the water temp at Daniels or Deep Creek?
Have you heard of anyone catching any largermouths out of Deep Creek in the last couple years?
[signature]
Thanks Pat, looks just like the ones I have seen in the rainbows out of Mantua a few times ice fishing.

[cool][#0000ff]From what I was able to find out about it, the parasites can spread almost anywhere through the bird link in the cycle. Then if there is a mud bottom and snails it will be there forever. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have not seen it on any fish from Mantua but that little lake is probably ideal habitat for it. Likely there will be more fish showing up with the "uglies".[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have caught a lot of rainbows in Utah with anchor worms. As long as they are planted in waters that get too warm for them in the summer there will be "pizza side" bows. Some of those are just plain gross and ugly.[/#0000ff]

CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE DEEP CREEK RES. IS? I'VE NEVER HEARD OF IT
[signature]
Next time I will put it on the Idaho board if it would make you feel better!
The trout in Deep Creek have had those spots on them for years. Sometimes you can't see the spots on the skin, but will see them under the skin when you remove the skin. Some of the fish that we released had so many bumps on them that you couldn't count them all.
I haven't seen or heard of any Bass beeing caught in there for a couple of years, but I don't fish there very often.
I don't remember what the water temp was!
