Decided it was finally time to hit the ice. Took my two boys ages 4 and 8 and headed to the lake at 5:30. Nine other of my friends tagged along "just for fun". It was a balmy -16 when we arrived, a real snot freezer.

We wandered out on the east side and found about 15 feet deep. Ice is about 7-8 inches with a few inches of snow on top. No slush. My youngest son drew first blood twice and landed two nice bows. The fish seemed to come through in groups and we would catch several and then nothing for awhile. Lots of fish on the finder but only about 50% did more than a looky look. We used a wide variety of jigs, mostly white in color. We tipped with just about everything at first but nightcrawlers seemed to do best for the first half of the day. After the sun hit the ice the fish were still around but even more picky. I finally got a few to bite using a little glow gentz worm tipped with wax worms.

My boys and I landed 9 fish total, lost several at the hole, and missed many hits. All were bows except for one cutt. Several of the fish were 18 inch fish. All the others in our group had similar results and I would guess we landed 30 or so fish for the morning. We headed home by 11:30 and it had warmed up to a grand 2 degree's. The w... did us a favor and stayed away.

Lots of people all over the lake, most in tents cause of the temps. Little tent cities everywhere. A good time was had by all. A few of our fish were invited home for sunday dinner. Forgot the camera as usual. Really need to add it to my check list!

Good report Big Cat. Sounds very similar to my day (12-15) down there. We were in the first arm right as you come up on Scofield. My buddies truck said it was -15 when we got there. We fished across from cabins on the far side of the lake. We were in 15-17 feet of water. I was using a glow ratfinkee tipped with green berkely gulp or a meal worm. My friend was using a green and glow ice fly with gulp. The gulp worked better for me. I landed 8 and my buddy landed 4. Missed at least that many. The fish would move through in schools and it seemed to work better letting the bait sit rather then jigging it. We arrived at 7am and left 12:30. Great day on the ice and no slush.

Similar results from our group as well except we had no ice shelters and it could get cold! It seemed that oranges and pinks were the color of the day and powerbait and night crawlers were the most productive.
