Oregon Fisheries Update

Salmon fishing on the Columbia is once again open and will stay that way Wednesdays through Saturdays. The fishing ended last week with great reports from the Westport area for anchor anglers. The re-opener saw mediocre results at best for both the lower and upper stretches. Tides will be improving this week and fishing should as well.
A 43-pound spring chinook was taken by a 10-year-old angler on the Columbia on Sunday, April 6th.
The Willamette continues its sporadic fishing but Sellwood, the Portland Harbor and the Multnomah Channel all had good days last week. Fishing slowed earlier this week but should pick up as well. Fishing should become more consistent this week. Santiam wild steelhead are in full swing.
The Clackamas and Sandy Rivers continue to put out a mix of steelhead. More wild fish are showing in the Clackamas. More springers are due back to the Sandy but we are still weeks away from any kind of peak on both the Sandy and Clackamas. Remember, these are selective fisheries as well.
The North Coast is still putting out steelhead as well and the water should be in ideal condition prior to the forecasted precipitation starting Friday. Most of the smaller tributaries like the Necanicum and Kilchis are closed for angling so check your regulations before you venture out on the North Coast. Sturgeon fishing in Tillamook Bay has picked up a bit from a slow winter.
The mid-coast rivers never delivered much good news for steelhead this winter but the Umpqua is still giving up quality spring chinook however it did slow a bit last week.
Grande Ronde steelhead fishing is set to close and although the fish have been reported past their prime, the fishing is still holding up. Fly fishing is just around the corner!
Smallmouth bass are becoming active in the upper Willamette and fishing will continue to improve as the water warms.
Bass angling on the John Day is consistent but these fish are finicky. Warmer, more stable flows will help this fishery out but that is several weeks away- especially with all the wacky weather we have been experiencing!
Lakes and ponds stocked with trout this week include Carter Lake, Cleawox Lake, Hampton Pond, Henry Hagg Lake, Canby Pond, Haldeman Pond, Trojan Pond, Cottage Grove Reservoir, Creswell Pond, Detroit Reservoir, E. E. Wilson Pond, Foster Reservoir and Green Peter Reservoir.
