I was reading "How to Catch Fish at Scofield Reservoir" by Louis Berg. Under his "Ten Tips to Help You Catch More Trout at Any Lake" he writes, "Hide your hook entirely within your bait. This only applies to bait anglers. Don't let fish see any part of your hook."
I label this statement a myth. I often intentionally leave well beyond the barb of the hook exposed when fishing with bait for trout. I especially do this when vertically jigging with bait tipped jigs.
Post up your facts that you consider to be myths or myths that you consider to be facts from now through Christmas. After Christmas I will pick the winning post of what I consider the best myth or fact presented.
"Want to know what you are playing for?" I will donate from my personal stash of "Why did I buy that?" -- a new Shimano Baltica Vertical Stack Tackle Bag (model ABVS230).

[black]So let the contest begin -- post up your best Myth or Fact.

[#bf0000]Contest rules - My fellow moderators are welcome to post, but are not eligibile for the contest. I will not ship the tackle box to the winner, so you will need to make arrangements for picking it up.[/#bf0000]

here is my myth or fact!: you need to use small gear to catch big fish when ice fishing for trout? or you need to use as small of hook as you can when bait fishing for trout.
i say big big big! myth: if you have the right bait, tube, lure, whatever on and the fish are hungry they will eat it no mater the size, in a lot of places i have found match your what ever your fishing with. to the biggest bait that the fish could have to eat in that lake or river system.. and use that size for the bigger fish! big fish don't get big from eating bug's.. they big from eating other fish.

[#0080ff]The "Moon" myth[/#0080ff]
[#0080ff][/#0080ff]
[#000000]There are alot of Myths that go along the lines of the Moon. One of which I have always heard is: If there's a full moon the night before your big fishing trip, you won't do very well. [/#000000]
Some might consider this a fact instead of a Myth, but the fishing usually remians the same for me whether the Moon is full or not. I think this is the most controversial myth of them all.

OK, lets stir the pot a little. Its been a while since we had some good 'ol fashioned controversy on here.
[#ff4040]Bass fishermen, in general, are whiners?[/#ff4040] [black]
FACT.[/black] If they don't have the latest, greatest, most expensive rods/reels, boats , vacations to Mexico, or if they see anyone eat/kill a bass (Oh my they taste good!) they just aren't happy.

[black]You know how we have all heard for years trout love CORN? Well I have personally witnessed guys ice fishing at Strawberry when you could see fish down the hole and they DID NOT catch a single fish on corn.

Pure myth that trout like corn!

Fiction: All fly-fisherman are anti-bait purist. I do only float feathers on moving water but for still water all is fair in my book.

[cool][#0000ff]Trout don't eat corn? Don't tell that to the "locals" up in Idaho...or in many other states that still allow the use of corn. I have seen many a limit cranked up on the banks by anglers using "Niblets hackle".[/#0000ff]

[black]Boy, did someone get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.[/black]

Sounds like a personal attack to me. I have found that opinions belong to people rather than groups.

I don't like the keeping of any fish, but I would not jump on anyone if they caught and kept a limit every day.

The bass boat, expensive rods and reels, are just a person giving themselves the best equipment available for the task at hand. I think that we all try to do that.

If you really want to group a bunch of people into an elitist fraternity, check out those that fly fish only. I have fly fished for over 60 years, and it's my choice of methods, but I don't confine myself to only fly fishing, and many of them will dunk a worm on occasion, but never admit it to each other.

Am I really verbal today.

MYTH: Catch & Release
Critics claim a fish that has been hooked will DIE if it's released.
*Caught a 10.2# striper at Powell a few years ago and got a bonus rapala that was still hooked in its mouth.

The idea that you have to be on the pond or stream at daybreak. As I have got older and health has gone down hill. I have to take care of all my health concerns so it is a later start. So we quite often don't get to the berry until 9 or 10. I will put my catch rate up with ALLMOST anyone. Not everyone, because with fishermen there is always someone who will out fish you.

Myth, you need to use low-vis line or it will scare the fish.
Facts: Fish dont care about the line as long as you use a clear leader. I fish exclusively with high-vis gold stren line due to the fact I can see it in the water and gage drift, currents or even see it tighten up due to a bite long before there is any indication on the pole.
I've fished side by side with family and friends and in most cases catch equal or more than they do.

Myth or Fact?
Whirling disease is... relatively new with in the last few years.
Whirling disease is... as devistating to a body of water as reported.
Whirling disease is... human caused (because the world revolves around us)
or
Whirling disease is... a normal fact of fish disease life that has been around for centuries, runs its coarse and the species is stronger for it.

My favorite myth is that a single fish will take the hook once. But will not bite for another day or two.
I actually caught two fish yesterday that had my hooks in them from previous hook sets that were lost from line cutting on the ice.

[cool][#0000ff]One of my favorites is that using "electronics" gives the angler an unfair advantage. Those who think that way have never had to watch fish on their sonar screen while failing to get a bite. If anything, sonar creates more frustration to luckless anglers because then they KNOW it is not because there are no fish in the area.[/#0000ff]

Myth: BLM holds the record for the largest fish caught from our grandfather's 14' boat that we used to launch through the surf on the central coast of California during the 1960s.
Fact: His brother, BaySport, holds the record with a large 17 pound lingcod. This success is generally attributed to the "Bowl Cut" that our mother gave me. To bad Rich, you should of went for the bowl cut!
