I received a reply from my representative about Mike Noel's legislation that would force the state to buy fish for stocking from private growers that won't have to follow the strict guidelines that protect against diseases. I also showed him to the Tribune article. The quick response and interest my representative, Todd Kiser, gave me in his response is commendable. Here's what he said:

"Thanks for the information. I was not aware of the fishing legislation. I am glad to have the heads up. Does DWR want to purchase fish from private sources that do not follow the same strict guidelines that DWR follows? It does not make sense to me.
I have known that Representive Noel has been actively supporting clean nuclear power generation. As for wanting it in his district it appears that his constituents want it there.
Representative Noel and I we're elected together. He has become a good friend. He is a hard worker, funny and very inteligent. I had the opportunity to sit next to him in the House Chamber for two years.
Unfortunately he was just diagosed with cancer. I wish him a quick anf full recovery.
Thanks again for the heads up. I will follow both pieces of legislation carefully. Should you want to discuse this more. Please give me a call. Home ***-**** Office ***-****.
Merry Christmas"

That's a pretty impressive reply. You mean some of these guys actually do that?

Apparently some of them do. I wasn't expecting anything except maybe a reply from an assistant, certainly not a personal e-mail from him.

Todd Kiser is a real credit to the organization. We had legislation up there a few years ago and I met with him about it. Intelligent, articulate, low ego, a general very nice guy. He may be a republican but I still really like him. It does not surprise me he would reply like this.

Here is some more follow up e-mails from Rep. Kiser. It is very important that when you write your representative that you let them know they are YOUR rep for the area in which you live:

MESSAGE 1:

Ryan,
Representative Noel is only one of thirteen members of the Natural Resources appropriations subcommittee. Senator Stowell and Representative Ferry who are the co-chairs of that committee are good leaders. Mike Styler is not going to be intimindated by Representataive Noel, he has eight or so years as a sitting representative and understands the process of appropriations and legislation. If this legislation is not good policy the bill will fail. I have not read the article. I responded to your first email on my blackberry and didn't pull up the article. The article did not link from this page. I will try and enter the website on my computer and see what I get. Please keep me posted.

MESSAGE 2:

I just read the article, the responses to the Tribune article and the comments by fishermen at the website you sent. My suggestion is to have your friends and friends of fishermen contact their senators and representatives. When writing their legislator please have them identify that they live in their district and give their residence of office address so the legislator can relate that the email is coming from a constituent. We get thousands of emails from non-constituents and I really appreciate it when someone who writes tells me where they live. If they do not I assume they do not live in my district.
