New for 2008. If you are planning to apply for a permit to hunt big game be aware of the changes." You must have a hunting or combination license before you can apply for a permit." Ain't that kinda like a lottery?

Hey Uncle D
Thanks for pointing that out for us, I'm sure that would have got someone in a pinch. Just another way that this Great state is extorting Money from our already depleted hunting accounts.
Have a great Christmas!

They have also reduced some of the fees for tags and raised the application fees, I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER. NOT![mad]

Kind of like the old Bait and Switch method. Idaho and Wyoming look better all the time to give my money to!

Isn't the whole draw system a lottery? Pay money you don't get back and then wait and see if you get anything. Sounds like a lottery to me.
There is a way around buying the hunting license every year. You only have to have a current one when you apply. Not when you actually have the hunt. Buy it at the end of permit aplication time this year and put in a week earlier the next year. Only need one every other year that way.

We hunt Wy. every year and they have shot their prices up for 2008 as well. Tried to reserve a room in Roosevelt or Vernal for our annual trek to Pelican ice fishing for a few days and the prices have either jumped dramatically in both cities or they are completely booked for Jan. Then you read about the Fish and Game Depts. through out the US can't figure out why we are losing more and more outdoorsmen every year, DAH![mad]

[#808000]The Wyoming Game and Fish is a self maintaining entity, which means they do not recieve any money from the states General fund for operational expenses. All tag sales go directly to the game and fish and are 100% used for wildlife managment in our state. [/#808000]
[#808000][/#808000]
[#808000]The 20% increase across the board and preference point increases were justified by the G&F because of the increased cost of wildlife managment. The cost has increased because of $3 gas, pay increases for G&F employees, and fewer license sales due to drought, along with the devistating impact the cute little harmless wolf is having on Wyoming's big game. They are also looking at the additional costs of wolf managment that starts in February which will cost the G&F up to $2million anually with very few tag sales to recoup the cost.[/#808000]
[#808000][/#808000]
[#808000]You may not like the increases but at least in Wyo the money does go towards the future and is not allocated in the states General Fund to be allocated by poloticians. Doesn't Utah's money go to the General Fund?[/#808000]

I think it is a bunch of crap that you have to buy a "hunting license" now to hunt. My dad has wanted to hunt turkey for years here in Utah and he has put in every year for three years without any luck. This year it would cost him $80 to hunt turkey because he has to buy a combination license that he wouldn't use because he has no desire to fish or hunt small game. All he wants to do is hunt a turkey and now we can't have the Father/son hunt we have been looking forward to because he doesn't think a turkey is worth $80, and honestly I don't either. In a couple more years no one will be able to afford to hunt in this stupid state. [mad]

Didn't the application period just end for the spring turkey hunt? Since the law goes into effect on jan 08, does that mean he had to buy a license for next year to apply for a turkey permit this year? I guess I could see him buying the permit if he draws but you would think he could wait for the results of the draw until he had to buy his combo license, since the deadline was in 2007. Anyone know how that would work? Since the turkey permits cost $45, it sure seems like a lot to pay for a permit to hunt them. WH2

Curt,
The law applied as of 1 Sep 07 so Turkey was covered.
The change doesn't affect me since I buy a combo every year. I have a few friends that only hunt big game and are really pissed about the whole thing.
Braz,
Yes all our sportsmens dollars go into the general fund. Then our legislature allocates us (wildlife consumers) about 72% of the dollars we put in. That is why our F&G guys are so underpaid. Look at the difference in Wy. vs Ut in saleries paid to game wardens, it's about a $7.00 an hour difference.
I bitch and complain every year to my elected officials but no-one gives a darn. So, I pay my money and take my chances in the Utah lottery. Then I go big game hunt in Wy. and Nv.
IFG
Isn't the hunting tag on it's own only $10. You don't have to get the combo but it is cheaper if you are going to fish and hunt.

Both licenses cost $26. Pay $4 more and get the combination.
It seems to me like the people who don't support wildlife in utah want to reap the benefits but not pay the price. I'm tired of people puting for a house decoration and not helping with the cost of managing wildlife.
Go out of state it's still cheaper for nonresidents to hunt utah compared to other states.
